A little background--last summer i was the lead teacher for a summer camp at the day care center that i work with..i had a class of 6-10 year olds...My boss told me to write down any concerns i had about last year so that we could address them this year...I need help wording one of my concerns so that it doesnt sound horrible..any help??

We had a "helper" come and help us in the mornings--she was 14 years old and her younger brother was a part of our class..I basically feel she did not do anything,n as she was on her cell phone or just sitting around most of the time. I want to mention, in one of my concerns, how i dont think that we need this helper as it was more of a hassel than anything....We had to keep track of her on trips and if we asked her for help, she argued with us...So i am trying to think of a nice way to say in my letter that i would rather us not have these helpers and just stick with children in the age range we are workign with..

thanks if you guys can help!

Maybe something like the fact that you are conerened with the amount of time needed to guide the 'helper' in her role that your campers are not having your full attention.

That a 14 yo helper is a bit young to be working as a helper. I know here we do not allow teens under the age of 16 to work as helpers in things like VBS and the church preschool and children's areas. That pretty much limits it to 10th graders and above. Also all volunteers in the perschool and children's areas must go through a police check.

I think the reason that the 14 year old is working is because both of her younger brothers are there...but i think her mom is using it as a babysitting thing for her....im friendly with my boss, but she wants me to document everything so we can have a "formal" discussion of everything..im just trying to think of a nice way to put it

Perhaps you can make a suggestion that cell phones should only be allowed by any staff for "emergencies" only?

I know some 14 year olds who could handle the responsibility of being a helper, in fact when I was 14 I worked as a "sub" at a town summer camp. I think whomever hires these helpers needs to make sure they are there to work, not socialize - nor for you to babysit. It should be written somehow that the helpers should actually "help" if not, they will not be allowed to visit during the hours the camp is in session.

how about i feel that the use of helpers in our classes distracts the children from thier activities a nd would be more suited for older persons. i would also like to address the use of cell phones during camp time, as some people have spent more time on them than with those they are there to help have fun with.
