Help with this situation

Hello,

I am not sure how this situation would play out:

(I have a February Use Year with 160 points.)

I currently have a reservation for October of this year. After using banked points from last year and some points from this UY I have 121 points left over.

For the trip in October I am on the wait list for 2 nights at BLT that will end up costing 44 more points than my current reservation.

I need to bank the 121 points that I have from the 2011 UY in September.

If my wait list comes through after I bank my points then I will need to borrow the 44 points from the 2012 UY.

I would like to make a reservation for May 2012 that will cost 297 points. If my wait list does not come through then I will have a total of 281 points (121 banked + 160 from 2012 UY). I will need to borrow 16 points from 2013 to complete the reservation. If the wait list does come through then I will need to borrow more.

What will I be left with if I have to cancel the reservation in May 2012? (It would be more than 30 days out.)

When I make the reservation for the May trip should I borrow more 2013 points than I need to have some extra 2012 points that can be banked if I don't need them?

Just to make things more interesting, if we enjoy our trip in October we will likely buy another Feb UY contract of 140-16o points.

Thanks for any input.

You can only borrow what you need to complete the reservation. The only way to borrow more and save current UY points would be to make a reservation that you intend to cancel first, and then book the real one.

But, not sure I see why you would want to do that. If you borrow more, its less you will have in 2013 so having extra 2012 to bank would simply be replacing what you took and would actually be more restrictive.

Since you have until September 30th to bank the points, IMO, I would have the wait list cancel for your Oct trip so that you can bank them all and not have to worry about borrowing.

When do you want to call and book that May trip? If you want to be able to use those 2011 points, bank all but the 44 now, make your reservation and then borrow to make up the difference.

If the wait list doesn't come through by September 30th, bank those 44 points and then ask them to reallocate the points to be part of your May reservation.

If you cancel that May reservation, you would be left with banked 2011 UY points and borrowed 2013 UY points (however many it turns out to be) that would have to be used by January 31st, 2013. You would be able to still bank the 2012 UY points.

If you are going to borrow for May 2012 but think you could cancel, just be sure you have a back up plan to go prior to January 31st, 2013 or they will be lost.

If you cancel the May trip then all of the 2012 points you used will be available for banking so I'm not certain where the thought is that you could free up more of them for that purpose by borrowing more from 2013? And as Sandi pointed out you would be bringing in points to the 2012 UY that would then be more restricted b/c they can't be banked.

A lot depends on what type of room you are wanting to reserve for May. For something that is not high demand I'd wait until the end of Sept to bank and see if the waitlist fills. If it doesn't then I'd bank the points and make the reservation for May. And in this case I'd probably just let the waitlist go to 30 days out and if it doesn't fill to just stay in the original accommodations that you booked for the Oct trip. Or, if I really wanted to try for the BLT rooms I'd have the waitlist go until 7 days out but bank at the end of Sept. Then I'd wait to make the May reservation until the waitlist expiration so that I still had 2012 points available to borrow if it filled.

Not knowing the types of rooms you're looking at that is my initial thoughts.
