I just washed a cute t-shirt I made my dd, and it cracked and looks awful! Can you just not wash these? I was careful to prewash the shirt, and everything! Followed the transfer instructions carefully, too. Any thoughts?? I'm so sad... :confused3

How long after making it did you wash it? You need to wait at least 24 hours after ironing on to wash.I usuually let mine go for several days which is usually after it's been worn them wash it.The transfers need time to cure or set before being put in the wash. They should be washed in warm water.

Did you put it in the dryer after washing?
It's best to let them air dry.I have a room with a clothes line in it.I hang them on hangers and let thme dry that way.

I waited a couple of weeks to wash it. It was hanging in my little girl's closet (I really didn't want her wearing it yet b/c it's for our trip, but oh well) and she took it out and wore it and got something on the fabric. So I washed it. I believe that load was washed in warm (would cold make it crack and wrinkle?). That's when I noticed it looked so awful. :guilty: I hung it up to dry. There is some mild discoloring in spots, too.

What brand of transfers do you all use?

Thank you!

I hope some one can help with this as I am making my parents tshirts or sweatshirts for their trip and do not want this to happen....how sad I am sorry this happened to you.

Did you pre-wash the shirt before ironing on the transfer?

Do you think it could be the Avery transfers that I used? Has anyone else had trouble with them?

Has anyone else washed their t-shirts with good results? I'm willing to try again, but I don't have unlimited funds, so I hate to waste a lot of money trying to get this right. :)

Did you take it out of the washing machine as soon as it was done? I find that letthing them sit in the machine is the worst thing. I can even dry them in the machine, as long as they aren't allowed to sit around crumbled up and wet.

Hmm...that's a good question. I'm honestly not sure. It was on a day when I was playing catch-up w/the laundry, so I know I did a lot of laundry that day. If it was left sitting in the washer, it wasn't for very long, but still, this is good information to have! I will make certain they don't sit after washing. Thanks for the tip! :goodvibes

Also, when you pre-washed them, You didn't use any fabric softner or dryer sheets?

but I am really following this thread so I can learn all there is to know before I make my shirts.

Yup :)

The reason you pre-wash them is to take off any sizing and fabric/stain sprays they may have put on..

Fabric softner can cause the transfer not to stick as well.

I suggest just washing them with some soap and then drying them with NO dryer sheets, or let hang dry.

Same goes for Tie-dyeing.

Good luck on your next shirts!

I'll wash the next ones w/out fabric softener and see how that goes! I've also reviewed the tips and helps thread, so hopefully, will have better results this time!

Thank you!! :sunny:
