I'm going to chime in here, as a teacher. Kids whose parents are involved and teach them that school is something to work at and is important do way better in most cases than those that don't. I would encourage parents to be involved and stay involved. I teach elementary, where I get most parents to conferences. My friends that teach in high school say they get just a few parents out of 160 kids!! Something is wrong with that. Just because they are older kids doesn't mean they can, or should, do it on their own.
To the OP, I hope you got some great ideas. I bet the teachers at the school appreciate your support of your son.
Great ideas! Nice of you to pass them on.Good to see a teacher's perspective. I agree that kids in the upper grades are still kids that need parental involvement and support. -------------------------------- Parenting is hard. Personally, I'd rather see an involved parent than one that is absent.
There is a huge range between over involved and absent. IMO the OP sounded very over involved. That doesn't make me an absent patent.
In and of itself, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with parents helping/guiding their students. As long as the help is asked for, and that's all it truly is, help. What initially took me aback, was the OPs use of 'us', 'I', and 'we'. That seemed to me to be slightly over involved, that's all.
FTR DS is a 17YO Jr in High School, works hard, gets good grades, has a handful of great friends, plays soccer, and is polite and respectful. He'll often bounce ideas off DH or I with regards to projects, paper, etc. We offer opinions if we have them, and that's it. If he needs more help he'll be back.

There are some on this tread that doesn't understand that. IMO, it would be a heck of a lot faster easier for me to do thing for my child an teach her to do them for herself. Brainstorming campaign slogans and platform with my child is being involved but my hope would be doing that for her first race would give her the skills to do it on her own for subsequent ones.

And I talk like this all the time...I was just telling my brother a funny story of DS and I hanging a shower curtain...I used the term when "we" were hanging the shower curtain, I wasnt doing any of it except telling him what to do bc I have a messed up shoulder and cant reach up.
BTW, for those lurking, I'd just like to say "Yes my kid is that fabulous" Carry on to all those who are hiding behind their screens.
You did see where I said "for those lurking" right? And aren't you just to be applauded for showing yourself. Now run back and tell all the other little trolls what you did so they'll be proud of you and pat you on the back. It's sad when I have to have someone tell me that others are out there slamming me because of something I posted on the internet. Find another hobby. I'm not interested in being swept up in your bully pulpit nonsense. And obviously there's a mole amongst you because someone told me about it. Have fun finding them.

Now let me ask you a question. What makes you think your opinion on parenting is wanted or needed by anyone on the DIS? I certainly didn't see the OP ask for it.
Now maybe Gretchen and Regina can move along and find someone else to bully.

What in the world are you talking about?![]()
That's right. None of us want any nasty, rude behavior around here. So cut it out everyone. None of this.Again with the nasty, rude behavior. .

Or this. And I also understood your implied attitude that you are somehow a better parent because you take a hands off approach. And your use of "attachment parenting" as a negative just reinforces my original understanding. And here's the bigger question - what do you care? What places you in a position to judge others' parenting styles and decide what is the "right" way and what is the "wrong" way?
or this.Guess what? My daughter also has a 4.0 GPA, as of the end of junior year #27 out of a class of 627 and takes honors and AP courses.
Or thisOMG how could I be so stupid? Of course that's it! The parents are obviously going to school and taking all the children's tests too and giving presentations and participating class. Forgive me for not catching that! I am truly humbled by your obviously superior intellect and parenting skills. I'll be sure to tell my daughter there's no need for college because she is truly doomed by the mother who raised her.

Did you think you were again sharing a pearl of wisdom that no one else could possibly comprehend?
