Hi all I am hoping you can help me brainstorm. My DH is will be mobilized in Jan with the Army for 18 mos. I wanted to put together a music list maybe on a mp3 player/ipod that would kind of say all the things I want to say to him while he is gone (how proud I am of him, how much I love him, what a great dad he is, how I can't wait for him to be home etc). Anyway even though I am pretty eclectic in my music listening I have a really hard time remembering names of songs and artist names. So I am hoping to get some help with that. Are there any songs that you have heard that you think would be suitable? I want this to be something that when he has some time to himself he can just listen and know that even though we are not together we are still joined in heart KWIM... TIA

The Distance by Evan and Jaron (from the Serendipity soundtrack)
I Could Not Ask For More by Edwin McCain
Love of My Life by Jim Brickman and Donny Osmond
The Nearness of You by Norah Jones

I know that everyone's taste in music is so different, but these are some I thought of. I love all of them!

My taste in music is pretty eclectic too so these are all over the place, but all ones that remind me of times DH has been away:

"I'm already there" - Lonestar

"Faithfully" - Journey

"Song for a Winter's Night" - now DH and I are old school so we prefer the Tony Rice version, but the Sarah McLachlan version is great too

This is a great idea, I bet DH will appreciate the time and planning that you are putting into this :)

I've done this for my husband as well. My list was romantic and sweet and just plain funny because that is who we are. I also included songs that meant something to us personally.

I'm Already There --Lonestar
Here Without You--3 Doors Down
When Somebody Loves You--Alan Jackson
Ticks--Brad Paisley
American Soldier--Toby Keith
Did I Shave My Legs for This--Deana Carter
Holding Out for A Hero--Bonnie Tyler
Right Here Waiting--Richard Marx
My Wish--Rascal Flats
I Melt--Rascal Flats
Forever and Ever, Amen--Randy Travis
Let's Get It On--Marvin Gaye
Sexual Healing--Marvin Gaye
Valentine--Martina McBride with Jim Brickman
What a Wonderful World--Louis Armstrong
When You Say Nothing At All--Keith Whitley with Allison Krauss
Beauty and The Beast--Celine Dion with Peabo Bryson

I also recently heard a couple new songs from some NationalGuard thingy that included Citizen Soldier and The Price of Peace. The Price of Peace was great because it was about from a daughter's perspective about her warrior dad.

If you need more suggestions I'd be happy to include more. I was just throwing out some. I know it tends to be more country than anything else but that's just because our selection is more that area.

Oh thanks keep them coming! Some of them are ones that I was thinking of but just couldn;t remember the titles and or who sang them this is helping a lot. The trick is tring to get this all together without him figuring out what I am up to!

How about "All my loving" by The Beatles and "When I need you" by Leo Sayer. I know those are both oldies but I think they would convey what you are trying to say.

First and foremost, thank you for your family's service and sacrifice. My you all be blessed with health and safety.

As to your request, the first two songs that came to mind were:

"Somewhere Out There" from an "American Tail (tale?)"
and
"I'll be Home for Christmas" the Josh Groban version with the soldiers' and families' voiceovers (that is if you celebrate Christmas).

Yes, I am so sorry that I did not say thank you in my first post. I want to thank you and your DH for your sacrifice!
Great song idea, too, All American!

I thought of two more that I wanted to pass on.
The first is "When You Are A Soldier." DH and I had this one in our wedding; it means a lot to us. The context is talking about life's battles and struggles in general, not true war like our soldiers are fighting now. However, I thought it might be one you would like. It is by Steven Curtis Chapman.
The second one I wanted to add is also by Steven Curtis Chapman. It is titled "I Will Be Here."

First, thanks to your DH and you for your service to our country!

PPs have given you lots of great songs. I am not very good myself about remembering song names, but had a couple of thoughts. Like, including your wedding song (if you have one). Are there any movies that you and your DH enjoy watching together that have soundtracks? I know there are many songs from movies that if I heard them I would think of my DH. Even if you know the movie names I'm sure us on the DIS could help with song names/artists.

Also, can you put pictures on the mp3 player (I know some of us in my house can, some can't)

Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer

Seasons of Love (Rent soundtrack) (but he will be gone more than a year :sad1: so that might not work so well)

eta: Thank you to your DH and to you for your sacrifice.

Lots of good ones already mentioned. Here are a few that I can think of.

Carpenters - close to you
Eddie Rabbit, Crystal Gayle - Just you and I
Faith Hill - There You'll Be
Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle
John Michael Montgomery - I love the way you love me
Juice Newton - The Sweetest Thing
Lionel Richie, Diana Ross - Endless Love
Rascal Flatt - My Wish (excellent for one being away and helping others even if you're putting a different spin on the meaning)
Tracy Byrd - Keeper of the Stars
Kenny Rogers - You decorated my life (I think we fail to actually listen to these lyrics, they are truly gold)
Billy Dean - If there hadn't been you
Bon Jovi - Thank you for loving me
Bon Jovi - Always (really nice, but you would have to forgive some of the lyrics)
Bryan Adams - (everything I do) I do it for you
Faith Hill, Tim Mcgraw - It's your love
Eagles - Love will keep us alive
Exile - Kiss you all over (not even slightly close to sappy and romantic)
Fleetwood Mac - Wish you were here (perfect lyrics - I listened to this 1000s of times while growing up)
Garth Brooks - To make you feel my love
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Gretchen Wilson - When I think about cheatin (so pretty this is iffy though)
Hall and Oates - You make my dreams come true (if you want to mix up the sappy a bit)
Hot Chocolate (you sexy thing - again to mix it up if you're interested in that)
Jeffrey Osborne - on the wings of love
Jim Croce - I have to say I love you in a song (changes meaning a lot, but it's the way you are saying, I love you).
Leo Sayer - When I need you
Sammy Kershaw, Terri Clark - The love of my life
Enrique IglesIas - Hero
Hollies - The air that I breathe
Joe Cocker - You are so beautiful
John Denver - Annie's song

Another might be and I'm not a huge fan, but my MIL LOVES it because FIL is retired military. It is kinda cute for this particular project you're putting together.

Shirells - Soldier Boy

EDIT: You could even title the CD, "Soldier Boy," and start with this song, or end with it.

Thanks folks! There are some awesome songs here. Some that I wouldn't have thought of off the top of my head. I have to admit, I am not very creative that way. I have also discovered some songs PP have mentioned that I haven't heard in a long while b ut do have memories for us and others I hadn't heard of but am glad that I have! Thanks all for your support. I was trying to find a way to not just have something to send DH with but also somethng to focus on besides just the preparation for departure. I am going to have FUN putting this together for him. Thanks Dis friends:love:
