I finally downloaded all my photos from vacation, and I noticed I'm missing a handful from one card. I ran short on memory space toward the end of the trip and had been deleting bad shots, but am pretty sure I didn't purposely delete these.

Whatever happened, it's not a huge deal. I had downloaded them with the Netbook onto my external hard drive. But my program wasn't downloading the RAW fies and I never had time to figure it out. So I have the JPEG's, but no RAW. My lighting on these wasn't the best, so I want to see if I can still recover the raw files.

I've never used the recovery software, but downloaded it and gave it a try. All it brought up in the scan were the same photos I can still view on the card without the recovery software.

Isn't there a way to recover the deleted ones? I have not reformatted the card.

Thanks as always for any help anyone can offer!

try using zar it's agood recovery program and free for photo recovery

Thanks Mickey88! I tried this one today after you posted the link. It still only recovered the photos that are visible when I put the card back in the camera.

This is the first time I've tried to recover any photos. Is it because the card is now full? Are they only recoverable as long as you have not filled the card back up?

Like I said, not the end of the world. I have the JPEG's. But the RAW files would have been nice too.

yes, if you use the card you write over the old files..

Like I said, not the end of the world. I'm just glad I hadn't deleted those off my husband's netbook yet. At least I have the jpeg's.

I'm still a little uncomfortable about the whole thing though. Once I found my JPEG's on the netbook, I was able to pin down what I was missing and found it was 54 shots!

I initially thought it was just a few and I must have deleted them by accident. I know I could not have deleted those by accident. I'd really like to know what happened so I didn't happen again.

Even if I've downloaded a set of photos, they should stay on a given card until I actually delete them or reformat the card, right?

is it possible that your camera settings got changed and you were only shooting in jpeg

Well, given my track record on this trip of messing up my camera settings..... it wouldn't surprise me. But the ones right before these and the ones right after these were still RAW + JPEG.

And for whatever reason, none of them downloaded in RAW on my husband's netbook. That's when I stopped trying to download, and decided to delete bad shots off of my cards and make room to keep everything on cards until I got home.

When I did get home and used my desktop, the other RAW files downloaded off of those cards just fine.

I just don't like mysteries I guess!

I AM glad I bought a bunch of extra memory before this trip. And I just ordered up another card as soon as I got home so I won't have to delete any of those until I'm good and ready.

It IS nice having enough memory to not have to download while on the road if I don't want to. But as someone who's still learning, I can definitely see the advantage of having a larger view of my photos so I can finetune what I'm doing as I go.

that's really odd, I never delete in camera, since reading that it can possibly cause corruption of a card, I've been told that's not possible, but why take chances.

My trip to WDW in JAnuary, I took my laptop( with a newly installed 250 gig hard drive}, and my dock plus 2 1TB internal drives
at the end of each day I uploaded my pics to my laptop, then copied them to each of the 1TB drives, that way I had 3 copies of everything, I got a little less sleep each night because of the process, but I slept better knowing my pics were safe..

.

were you using a program to upload to the netbook ??

Well, I'm sure that's why I was having trouble with the RAW files downloading. I have had several Canon models through the years and just used what came with the first one, PSE 2.0!!! :scared1: Somewhere along the way, they stopped including a PSE program with the camera.

The netbook was fairly new, and I remembered the night before leaving that it needed a program to use, just to let me dump the photos in. (I had a 1 TB Passport external hard drive along to back everything up, and even thought I'd erase some cards if needed.) Since I hadn't had problems with the 2.0 on my computer, I just grabbed what I thought was the disk. I need to check and see if maybe I grabbed the wrong one.

I was going to try and download a better program online, but by then we were at the Grand Canyon with no internet access. I guess if I was really dedicated, I would have driven back to the general store, where they did have WiFi.

Sooooooo..... like I posted on my trip report, I'm going to upgrade to LR3 and PSE8 as soon as I get my son to add service pack 2 to my XP. Not surprisingly, everything here is woefully out of date......

The biggest issue for me is making sure I have a better plan for our December trip. I think with a couple extra cards, I can shoot to my heart's content without needing to delete in the camera.

I don't use a program for uploading my pics to my pc.

I pop the card into the card reader, then open windows explorer , I then create a new folder, and within that a subfolder for raw and for jpeg,
I then copy the raw files over to the raw folder, when traveling I only work with raw, once home I run my sony software and batch process the pics into the jpeg folder, this gives me the same files as if I shot raw & Jpeg

this also gives me more space on each card, since I don't shoot jpeg

That helps to know. I'm as behind the curve on computer knowledge as I am on computer programs. Once I had trouble I really wanted to post a question here, but that whole "lack of internet" thing held me up.... :rotfl2:

I haven't worked with RAW files yet, so that's the only reason I shot RAW + JPEG. I want to upgrade my programs and learn, and was pretty sure we wouldn't be making that trip again any time soon, so I wanted to have the RAW files to work with when I do have time soon to figure it out. I wanted the JPEG's thinking it would be the easiest way for a RAW newbie like myself to see the photos and email some to friends when we got home.

I've really got to get up to speed on this stuff, and every post from you guys helps.

On most Canon dSLR cameras, RAW format is only available in P, Av, Tv and M modes.

If the camera was reset to Green Box mode, you only get JPEGs.
