Help with phone streaming and tethering!!

I just got a new Droid from verizon and have a streaming app. I want to stream from the parks. Now I'm reading about tethering costs and that I don't "actually" have unlimited data. When I go on the verizon site it doens't tell me how much data I've used, just says have unlimited. How does this all work. Does anyone know? I don't want to get surprised with a huge bill.
I'm new to this sort of phone plan so I've only just heard of tethering now.

As I understand it (and I might be COMPLETELY off base), the tethering will allow you to use your laptop online using the 'internet connection' from the phone. This would be a good option for people like me who live in an area where they can't get a high speed internet connection (yes, some of us still have dial up and no DSL or Cable internet option).
