Hi!
Has anyone rented a car recently in Europe? I thought I remember some people last year traveling via car before and after their cruise. If so, can you help me with some figures:

How many km per liter do most rental cars get? (Thinking compact manual - Opal Astra type car)
Also, did you have unlimited mileage?

Cheers!

For a small manual like that, plan on around 20 km/liter (45-50 mpg). As I recall, when I rented twice with Hertz in Germany it had unlimited mileage, and once in Italy with a smaller company it had unlimited mileage. I don't know if that is standard with all European companies.

One of the problems comparing mileage in countries using the metric system to the US is that we use liters/100km as a standard. What PP answered would mean getting 5L/100km, which would be in Prius territory. Use fuelly.com to get numbers for various car. An Astra gets around 7.3L/100km, which is 33mpg.

We’ve been renting cars in Europe for a very long time and unlimited distance is not necessarily a standard option. Europcar usually doesn’t include it, Sixt does. It varies a lot depending on location and offers.

Something else to watch for with rentals in Europe is that depending on whether you book through one of the "major" car rental companies or some local sites, the price quoted may include some sort of insurance coverage

I recommend using the consolidator Kemwel or Auto Europe. They are related entities. I rent at least twice a year for 12 days at a time and get full coverage (usually renting in Italy) through these sites and rent from Hertz. Far cheaper that through Hertz directnly, Also unlimited mileage.

THANK YOU!! I knew about the liters/100km standard and that's where I got "stuck." I appreciate your example! We are renting from National(enterprise at Brussels airport) ... I need to call to verify milage part because one option had a lower price yet I saw a "total miles" line that stated 1100 and another option was a bit more in price yet stated 3000 for total miles .... THANKS again!

THANK YOU!!! We ran into that in Iceland last year! We are renting from National (Enterprise in Brussels)

THANK YOU again!! I just tried Kemwel! Prices look great! Do you usually call their 1-877-820-0668 number or book via online? Also, the full coverage you get, is that usually basic, inclusive or no deductible? THANKS again!

Hi again! Sorry for another question ... how can you tell if it's unlimited mileage?

I always book online. No deductible with extended cover is what I book. It will give you the details about the different of the coverage.
