My Mom and I are planning a weekend trip to NYC to see a few broadway shows. We will be flying from Buffalo ny. Which would be the best airport to fly into and the best way to get to hotel(I don't want to drive)? What shows Would you recommend? We are thinking of Mamma Mia, Wicked, or chicago. And Anything else you would recommend. Thanks!

I have heard Mamma Mia is the best one to see.

JFK and Laguardia are pretty much the best ones for NYC, if you fly to Newark you are about an hour away. I think JFK has more options to get to NYC, check the website, that should have lots of info

Good luck and have fun! :flower:

I, too, loved RENT--we saw it twice. I haven't seen Mama Mia because I don't like ABBA and it's all of their songs.

We just went to see The Producers last week and it was great. We got tickets for $50. at the TKTS booth on the day of the show.

Thank you! TKTS is part of rushing, if you do go to see Rent the day before go to the Theatre boxoffice (nederlander) and ask about day of specials and rushing and they should be able to tell you how. When I did it I believe it was around $25 a ticket in the first 5 rows!

We saw Chicago in NYC last August and it was GREAT! :) Have a good trip!

Hey there! Just got back from NYC last night!!!

We saw Phantom of the Opera while we were there. Music is awesome! If you haven't already seen it, would highly recommend. We wanted to see Wicked, but the show was sold out.... supposed to be very very good.

Also, Monty Python's Spamalot got very good reviews... couldn't get in to that one either. Met some people who saw it and thought it was great!!!

Have fun!!!

just got back last night from NYC also...we saw Hairspray which was great! High energy, fun show. DD's dance team went for a fun weekend and lucky me got to tag along! Wicked is supposed to be great too...you could try TKTS for tickets, but be aware that the line can be very long sometimes. If you don't mind waiting, you can get some great deals. We were going to see On Golden Pond too, but didn't have the time to fit it in. Have fun!

Wicked is great! Tough ticket to get though. We won the lottery on our trip. Rent is terrific too. Spamalot is very fabulous, but also another hot ticket. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is fun too, different than Spamalot, but still fun.

We flew Song into Laguardia and used Carmel car service for both our trips and had no problems either time.

Have fun, I love NYC!

Mamma Mia is a good time, but it wouldn't be my first choice unless you couldn't get tickets to any of the other shows. Spelling Bee is supposed to be great, getting good buzz, but it was transferring to Broadway from Off-Broadway the week we were there. That might be a good one to see.

Newark is not an hour away from NYC - you can actually see the skyline as you land). You can take a monorail from the terminals to the NJ Transit station at the airport & ride a NJ Transit train right into Penn Station in NYC, - it takes less than a half hour if the trains are on time. From there you can take a cab, subway, or walk to your hotel (depending on where you are staying). You can also take shuttle buses into the City from Newark.

The time between any airport and NYC depends upon what time of day you are arriving. If you hit NYC near rush hour, it will take a while no matter which airport you come from. I believe JFK is the furthest (distance wise) from the City.

Good luck, and have fun!

P.S.: Saw Mamma Mia with my sister last year - excellent show!

We just saw Mama Mia a couple of weeks ago. There were 14 of us. We are late 30's and 40is we all brought our daughters. We had a great time. I wasn't really looking forward to the play, but just the outing with friends and family, but it was a lot of fun. I think it's more of a fun thing than a "great play".
Wicked sounds great, haven't gotten there yet, but that's the one I would choose.
We saw Chicago years ago also it was great.
This is a good site for some discounts
www.broadwaybox.com/broadway.aspx I learned about it here on the DIS.

I would do JFK or LGA not Newark. LGA a little closer.
Have a great trip!

We went to NYC last week for a couple of days. We saw Mamma Mia and thought it was great. This was a group of high school music and drama students and a handful of parents and teachers. We also saw the Producers, which was good but most of the kids liked Mamma Mia better. Last year on the trip we saw Hairspray and 42nd Street. Hairspray is the hands down favorite of almost everyone who saw all 4 shows. Can't help you with much else as we were on a bus trip planned by someone else.
