So I just got my new MacBook last week and it's awesome!

BUT, last night I went to go transfer my videos from my camcorder to my new mac via FireWire....Yup...no FireWire PORT!

I know, I should have checked the specs before I purchased the mac, but I thought a firewire port was standard, just like the usb ports or the power port!!!

So I'm sitting here with my new macbook, Disneyworld videos, and nothing I can do about it...unless someone here can help me!!!

I can't connect via USB, because my camera kit did not come with the USB and I didn't feel like calling JVC to send me one (and from what I heard, videos appear more clearly via firewire).

Any options out there for me???!!!:worship:

Return the MacBook and spend the extra $200 on the MacBookPro?

You really don't have any random USB cords laying around? I have them everywhere. I'd just transfer it via USB. It'll be slower but I don't think you'll really notice an extreme quality difference.

Thanks for responding!

Do you think I could send it back, even though I already transferred everything over from my iBook to MacBook??

Yeah, I went through all 9 USB cords last night, and none of them are compatible with my camera.

I've been thinking of a few more options...

1)Buy more memory for my iBook (only has 8gb available :scared1:) and I know you need at least 25 to transfer video

2)Buy the burner, so I directly connect my camera to the dvd burner without the use of a computer

3)Call JVC and see if they have the USB cord still available for my camcorder...went through their model numbers online last night and none of them matched up...

I was reading about a ethernet to firewire cable....know anything about this?

Depending on how long ago you bought it you may be able to return the macbook for the macbook pro plus the difference.

The other option that may be possible is get an external hard drive that has both a usb connection and fire ports...plug your computer into the usb port and camcorder into the firewire port. As I said this MAY work, I dont know for sure.

The need for firewire is why I opted for an Imac(both 400 and 800 fire wire) over the macbook.

Dear Leshaface,
You can check on the USB adaptor for your camera, but just as easy is a USB/Firewire hub. Something like this is sure to work: http://www.amazon.com/Firewire-1394...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1271871149&sr=8-3

Walt

I'll look into this! thank you!

Called today and the return policy is within 14 days to return...today is day 14....

I DO have an external hard drive...I can look into that too!

And I really wished I had payed more attention...I think it's because my moms MacBook has firewire capability so I assumed that the one I was getting would have it as well...never assume I guess!

Bummer on the return.

Looks like a Firewire to USB adapter or hub would be your best bet (and most economical.)

I wouldn't spend a lot on a dedicated DVD burner (don't you want to edit anyway) or another external.

You might be able to use the external as a pass through.

If you are going to spend a significant amount, I personally would head to the nearest Apple Store, explain what happened and see if they will work with you on the upgrade.

Is this a HDD camcorder? You could just borrow someone's computer who has Firewire and copy from there to an external hard drive, which you have anyway for backup, right? That would be the cheapest option.

Yeah go to the Apple store explain your situation and what you want to be able to do. They might still take it back. The more and more I read about the subject, the more I think the best route for you is to get the Macbook Pro.

I agree. This is one of the reasons I chose the MacBook Pro. I went in just wanting the Macbook, but they asked me all sorts of questions of what I would be doing with it and we decided the Pro was the better of the two.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

wnissen - I would, except the transfer itself usually takes about 8 hours for an hour long dvd...:scared1: - I know right???

I did some research and I was able to find the correct model number USB adaptor for my camcorder, so I went ahead and ordered it. I'm really hoping it works!!!

If not, I did find a share station dvd burner for about 200 which transfers videos straight from camcorders directly onto a dvd, in about an hour! At least that's what the reviews have said!

I really appreciate everyones input! Well, i've DEFINITELY learned my lesson, and will be doing way more intricate research for the next time I need a comp!
