Hi UK Community Board

In 3 weeks I'll be in London, staying at the Savoy, I've got tickets for Phantom, Lion King, Mamma Mia and Mary Poppins.

I need some help with restaurants near the Savoy/Theatre district, anything nice you could recommend? like Italian or Steak houses? Are there any american chain restaurants in that area (like hardrock or Rainforest?)

Anyone eaten at the Grill at the Savoy? or the other one, riverview I think it's called.

Thanks in advance

There is a lot of places to eat around there Covent garden has many so has Leicester sqaure and Piccadilly, cheap resturants like Garfunkels are around Aberdeen steakhouse, My personal recommendation is MY OLD DUTCH at Holborn just up the road it does giant PANCAKES honestly you have to try it.

The hotels tend to be expensive the Savoy is well known and very top of the range.

I will try and come back with some detail.

Hard rock

Address:
Hard Rock Cafe London
150 Old Park Lane
London W1K 1QZ, England

Thats a small tube away I think Hyde park corner on Piccadilly line can get that from Covent garden, or Charing cross and change at Piccadilly circus.

Is covent garden near the Savoy and the theatre district? The shows all start at 7:30pm and I would like to have a nice dinner close by just prior.

The Savoy is on the strand and Covent garden is just up from that about 5 mins walk easy pace, close by is Charring cross and trafalger square.

The theatre district is all around you a few on the strand and a few up towards covent garden and up towards Holborn all an easy walking distance.

Hard rock is further I could walk it but I know London well, i would suggest the tube for that.

I heard about a restaurant, I think it is called Heaven & Hell (but in Italian) Upstairs everything is clouds and angels, and downstairs everything is firey red. Have you heard of this restaurant?

Sorry no but I bet someone else would have, sounds expensive!

hi. sorry i cant help u with the resturants but just thought i would say i have seen phantom in london and it is amazing. u will have a fantastic night. hope u have a good trip x x :)

there is a planet hollywood between leciester square and picadilly, that is walkable....there is also a rainforest cafe on shaftesbuey ave, also walkable.

Lots of nice places in Covent Garden, Maxwells is very good there.

On The Strand itself there are a number of Pubs and there is a pizza hut and a mcdonalds and things. The Savoy food is VERY nice. I was once in a competition there and we had a celebration dinner in their ballroom, it was truly amazing. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. I can't remember the name of the road but there are lots of restaurants on the road that links leicester square with Tottenham Crt Road (charing x road anyone????)

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll be checking out the links.

I think I am pretty well set, I have a couple of tours booked and horseback riding at Hyde Park. The show tickets, the London eye tickets, thames cruise tickets, buckingham palace stateroom tickets.

What is my best way to get around? the double decker buses (Big Bus)

I would like to avoid the tube if possible

I hate to say it but the tube is the easiest and usually most direct way to get around. If you are staying centrally and all your activities are central its fairly easy to walk with the aid of a streetmap and the road signs. Erm....the buses can be good but the traffic is often heavy epecially in the tourist areas and you have to know which bus to get and which stop to get it from (and with over 70 bus stops on or just off oxford st alone it's not always easy)

Have a wonderfull time, Phantom of the Opera is amazing!

:sunny:

The Big Buses are a fun way to get around and are frequent and you get lots of information about the places you travel through, however they are VERY expensive (£20 a day) and if you are unfortunate to suffer rain then you can't really enjoy the views from the top deck as it is open.

The savoy grill is fab but very expensive - its also a great celeb spotting joint - I saw Joan Collins and Kate o Mara there (not together though - shades of dynasty!)

Hi Cass,

The Rainforest Cafe is on Shaftesbury Avenue.

To be honest, around the theatre district you will have literally hundreds of restaurant choices, most offering a 'pre-show' menu which is two or three courses with fast service to ensure you get to the show on time. I'd just walk around and pick something that looks and smells good!

The Savoy grill is nice, it will be a really nice meal, you won't be disappointed!

Have a lovely time and enjoy the hot sunny weather!

Hi guys, thanks for your posts & best wishes... Iam really excited about seeing the shows. I have seen all of them before (except Mary Poppins) :goodvibes

About the pre show meals, I am worried we won't get in without a reservation... can you just walk in no problem?

How long a walk is it from the Savoy to the theatre area... should I figure 15-20 minutes? or is it more like a half hour++

Thanks!

PS I am having a hard time figuring out what to pack because of your big heatwave. I am on a cruise for 10 days prior which goes up to Inverness/Glasgow/Edinburgh/Wales/Belfast/Dublin so I need formal clothes for night and casual clothes for day.. summery stuff for if it's hot and warmer stuff for if t's cool & rainy. I have a huge pile of clothes on my dining room table and I am really having a hard time deciding.

My trip is Aug 10 - 20 on the cruise.

and then Aug 20 - 26 in London (will it be cooler by then?)

thanks
