My 8 yr old DD has no idea what she wants to be this year. I was at Target for over an hour this morning looking around and nothing caught my eye that was under $40 for the costume and accessories.

So, tonight I suggested that she be a chef! She has a cute apron with her handprints from her Adventures in Cooking class last year and I am going to bring home some paper chef hats from work and write "Chef Lindsey" across the headband part. I also suggested we tie a wire whisk and a pair of tongs on the apron strings that crisscross the front. I am also thinking of water misting her cheeks and sprinkling some flour on them.

Any other suggestions?

Do you think its a dumb idea?

HELP!

"Chef Lindsey" sound like a wonderful idea!!!
Anything "home-made" is soooo much better than bought from Target!!

Sounds like a great costume! I love homemade costumes.

The chef is a very cute idea! I like homemade costumes better too. I've saved a trunk with most of the costumes my 4 kids have worn. It's so much fun for my 8yo to play dress up with all her friends. Some of them are getting worn out we've let so many friends borrow them, but every year it brings back fond memories for me! My favorite is a Care Bear costume from 1985. A silly little plastic mask and vinyl suit my 2 year old son wore. He was so precious!!

I also like to use clothes found in thrift shops, garage sales, etc. I look for costumes all year round. We have one dress that was a flower girl gown in a size 7/8 that I believe 6 different girls have worn as a bride costume. It's also had wings and a crown added to it for a Fairy Princess.

I keep picturing the chef from the Muppets, with his hat pulled over his eyes and his little black mustache. I think you have a great idea for a costume.

Sounds really cute.

DD is 5 and can't figure out what she wants to be.

I love homemade costumes, too. Last year, my DD8 was a waitress. We glued a bunch of her play food to a tray, gave her an apron, a nametag, and tied a scarf around her neck. She carried a pot of "coffee" and had a notepad and pen in her apron pocket. It was so simple to do.

This year, she is going to wear her robe, fuzzy slippers, and we are going to put up her hair in curlers and then put facepaint on her to look as if she's getting a facial. She'll probably carry a coffee mug in one hand and the newspaper tucked under her arm.

My friend is making a Dalmatian costume for her niece. White sweat outfit and hot gluing black fabric spots to sweat outfit after hallowen it's gonna be PJ's. Her niece loves Dalmaians. I'm half tempted to do this one myself for me.

I think that is a very good idea. My 10 year old is still not sure what to be for halloween but he has talked about being a chef when we grows up for a couple of years now....maybe that would for him too ( hope you don't mind sharing the idea:D )

Now you have me thinking..................................

I don't mind sharing at all! I'm just glad everyone else here thinks its a pretty good idea.

Good!! If you come up with any other ideas to go with the costume, please share. I am trying to figure out where I can get an apron and chef's hat from.

I think it is a great idea! DD4 wants to be Velma for Halloween, so I have been building that costume from scratch! Do you know how hard it is to find orange knee socks??? I had to buy a pair of white knee socks and some orange dye!

Chef is a great idea.

One year my son was a bunch of grapes. We blew up a whole lot of purple balloons. I took an old t-shirt and sewed the balloons to the shirt.

Homemade costumes are so much better and fun.

You could probably buy an apron from Wal Mart, Target etc. Ask at a local restaurant about the paper chefs hat.

I love this idea! Think I'll steal it too for one of my dd's. We have lots of aprons that they have decorated and we have chefs hats that my stepmom made for them several years ago. I hate the thought of spending $20-$40 for a store bought costume that they are going to wear one time. Its just not worth it. Now, to steal someone elses idea for my other dd (unless I can convince them both to be chefs).
