help with gatwick airport

please some adivse
1. i have heard there are some big problems with long check in times and getting passed security at the moment.i was going to check in the day before does that mean i will not need to go to the normal check in at all on the day of travel?
2.has anybody seen or heard of the delay with getting passed security just want to make sure i leave enough time
3.because i am a smoker i want to stay in the smoking zone as long as possible is that ok to do that and go through security say 1 hour before flight

If you do twilight checkin the day before , you will have boarding pass , so you just need to go through security as you will have your boarding pass

We got back on Sunday, our luggage was transferred straight thorough to Belfast, which i was glad about as it was a nightmare in the checkin areas of the airport. it was crowded and the queues where horrendous, Going through security took a while as queues where long ,then after they take your Pic more queues, probably took about 20mins or so to get through , maybe a bit longer.
One thing i noticed at Gatwick , when we left Belfast and coming back through from Orlando, we all had to put our shoes we where wearing through the xray, Gatwick did not bother with the shoes ,which surprised me.

It took us about 30 mins a few weeks ago to get through Gatwick security, but I've heard of it varying by quite a bit to the extent that leaving one hour may be plenty, maybe not enough

Maybe check with the people at security entry when you get there as to how long the delay is and gauge it from there.
