Help with finding cheaper trans.....

I need to know anything and everything about getting the absolute, rock-bottom, best prices for airfare and rental car. I know most of the people here are going to Orlando and we're going to California...but I figure the same info would apply to both. We're in Hawaii so we have to fly. When is the best time to book airfare....as far out as possible or closer to the departure dates? Is it cheaper to book online at the airline websites or should I go somewhere else? Is there a specific day/time when cheaper fares come out? Where do I get codes/coupons/anything to make this cheaper and how close to my departure dates do I need to find them? Would joining AAA help or does it not really matter? What about using the entertainment books for coupons for car rental? Any info you can give me would be sooo helpful. Thank you so much.

Check with mousesavers.com. Mary's site is loaded with info on rental cars for DL as well as WDW. This has helped me save a ton of money in the past.

As to airfare: I ususally do a "test run" on Orbitz that gives me a general idea of flight times and costs. Then I just check them every day to see trends. For us, booking online through the airlines website has been cheapest. You may find otherwise. Orbitz doesn't carry all airlines, especially the discounted ones, so find out who flies from your airport of choice and keep checking. I am told that most airlines discount flights mid-week, like Tues or Wed, so be sure to check the sites on these days.
