Ebay novice, and the seem to be pretty stealthy about hiding this info. If I sell an item on Ebay for $20, how much am I actually going to get after ebay and paypal fees?

I think the Ebay fees are 9% and Paypal is a flat fee per transaction and a percentage of the total, somewhere around 3-4%. I always figure on 14-15% of the total bid/sales price for Ebay items.

I just sold something on ebay for:
Sale: $6.50
Shipping: $3

Ebay charged
Final Value fee (on the sale price) $0.59
Final Value Fee on Shipping $0.27
*They charge a fee on shipping now to get you to offer free shipping because the % they charge on the sale price is higher than on the shipping price so they'd get more that way. So Scammy!

Paypal charged:
$0.58
*paypal just charges a percent of the income, there are no fee's attached....yet! Don't give them any ideas lol!

So my final sale was $9.50 and I was left with $8.06 before shipping. So $1.44 in fees.

For the sake of argument, depending on your shipping price and category it's in and all the possibilities it's close to $2 in fees for every $10 of final sale (shipping included) price.

..and they started doing this because so many people would offer an item for .99 and then charge $20.00 shipping for a light item, to avoid paying the fees..really don't blame them, although it does suck.
It is still, to me, a good deal. A local consignment store here charges 30%..Ebay is a much better deal IMO.
Now, if congress manages to push through the sales tax thing, that will totally mess up Ebay if every single transaction MUST charge sales tax..what a mess that would be.

Actually the shipping fee is the same percentage as the final value fee.

Fyi Its not sales tax congress passed with paypal, it is income tax. This year the IRS began requiring sites like paypal to issue 1099s to some of its users.

You will only be issued a 1099-K from paypal if you have $20,000 in goods and services sales and completed 200. So most wont run into it, however I suspect they are paying a way for the future where all sales will be reported on a 1099-K.

If that happens it will be crucial for people to document the cost or cost basis for the goods they have sold on ebay sites as well as the fees they paid...

I know that..but what they are talking about now is SALES tax on internet items..it started with Amazon, but if it passes will affect all internet commerce..

Ooops. I thought I read somewhere that it was different. Thanks for clearing up my error.

People still do charge crazy high prices for shipping you just don't see it as often. I often wonder if they do not know about the new fee.

Ebay is still worth it but just barely in my eyes. I've had some luck on their recently with a few little items. It's nice that they offer the 50 free listings a month. I can't believe some people make over $20,000. I'd be WAY to scared to have that much money go through paypal as they are so quick to freeze your account for something!
