Help with downloading fonts!

I need help with downloading free fonts I found on the internet.

I am frustrated because I consider myself somewhat computer literate, but I can't figure out how to get my new fonts to work.

I downloaded the file into my Fonts folder in Windows. I can even see the file listed with the other fonts in the folder. But, when I open my Word Program and look at the Font list, it doesn't show up. I've restarted the computer a couple of times too.

I'm sure I'm missing some simple step.

Can anyone out there give me the step by step process??

1. Is the file a .ttf or is it a .zip? if it's a .zip then it's compressed and you need to extract it first. In order to do that, you need WinZip (download free) or if you have Windows XP it already has it in there.

2. If you have WinZip, uncompress it by right-clicking the file name and click on extract to here...
This will extract the actual true type font to the Windows font folder.
If you have Windows XP, you can just right click it and extract it to the Windows font folder.

You will still have to install your new fonts even if you have already put them in your fonts folder. Go into your fonts folder in your windows directory, click file, then install new font. Click on the directory they are stored in (hold down the Ctrl key and you can click on all of them at the same time, this saves time!) and then hit install all new fonts.

I have downloaded fonts just as described above first unzipping them and then installing them into the fonts folder that I got to from clicking on My Computer. Just to add some of the trouble I ran into at times was I kept getting the message that the font folder was buy and could not load the font. I would just wait a few minutes and try again sometimes it works right away but other times I have to go back to it another time, you just have to be patient if it doesn't work the first time.

Thank you everyone! I finally got it resolved,what a mystery.

Just in case anyone else out there is dealing with Windows ME, the problem I had was that when I clicked on File (while in the Fonts folder) it didn't list an option to "Install new font". I was going crazy because even the Help on my computer kept telling me the same thing and I couldn't see it! My husband finally got involved and discovered through a little surfing on the internet that we were missing this option. He found a link called "Missing install font on WindowsME" and followed the instructions for reconfiguring that file and low and behold, I can now install my fonts! I gave him a huge kiss!
