Help with cruising out New York!

We are hoping to attend a cruise out of New York in Oct of this year. I need help. I will fly into LaGuardia most likely the night before. Im thinking to save money. I will stay at hotel near LaGaudia. Its about 200, give or take with one with transportation from the airport and breakfast. Then going back to Laguardia for disney transportation? I read horror stories of Cab drivers. The hotel disney recommends, are expensive for being there less than 12 hours. Any thoughts on transports, where to stay, anything will be helpful. Also will Disney transport your luggage and check it in like at Port Canaveral?

Disney transportation is about $20 per person. NYC cabs aren't as bad as people say but Disney might make you feel more secure. There will be porters to take your luggage at port.

Agreed on the cabs - especially if you're going into Manhattan (which you are to get to the port). Uber and Lyft have really made them up their game, and pretty much everyone having GPS on their phones has curbed the "drive all kinds of out of the way" thing that used to happen.

That said, coming from LGA (ugh...there is nothing at either of the other airports -JFK or EWR??) you are on the meter. JFK is a flat rate into Manhattan. (EWR is metered as well.)

If you fly into JFK instead you can take the monorail to Jamaica station where you can get a train into Penn Station. That's what we do and it works well. Olts of sites offer hotels foe good prices although Oct is a busy time. I would look ahead at Groupon, Living Social and others. If you stay downtown you can even walk to the cruise terminal.Just a thought if you are looking to save money as painlessly as possible.

There's been a few threads on this and in one recent there was a suggestion to stay at some of the hotels in jersey and stay parked there. Apparently there were some good deals doing that. Search the threads for specifics, it was about a month ago.

LGA wouldn't be my first choice unless you need it for your flights to work out. And staying at a hotel in NJ is probably cheaper, and not really any harder to get to the port from.

I would book the Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City. Not the ritz, but has been one of my go-to hotels when I go back to NYC to visit my family. It's maybe a $15/10-minute taxi ride from LGA, and usually a lot cheaper than $200 a night. You can easily taxi or Uber from there into Manhattan. I definitely would not drag yourselves and your luggage on the AirTrain then the Long Island Rail Road from JFK, to Jamaica Station, to the super (and I mean super) crowded Penn Station in Manhattan. If you hit the morning rush on a weekday, you will curse your decision.

We live locally and often stay at the Residence Inn or Courtyard Central Park when we go to the city (both in same building...Residence Inn is Park/Times Square views...Courtyard is Times Square, River views), and we can see the cruise port from there. It's inexpensive on the weekend, includes free breakfast, and the views are amazing! I would take an Uber from the airport to the city, sleep in a hotel (weekends are least expensive in NYC) then take Uber or cab to port. Rather than having to schlep back to the airport to take Disney transport.

But why on earth would anyone want to drag their bags onto an hour-long ride on the A train? Always crowded during the day, and potentially during rush hour? Speaking as a Queens native, that sounds like a nightmare to me. When you're headed for a cruise, it isn't as if you're traveling light, you know?

Some of us walk from Penn Station to the port. On my two Disney cruises we found it great walking (and we are in our sixties). Most people probably get a cab or Uber since there is usually not much traffic between Penn Station and the port.

i always us a car service from the airports in new york - they have a set fee, plus tip..
i use dial 7 - have used them for years..
i get their smallest, cheapest car....i think it's $34 plus tip from laguardia to manhattan...

inside manhattan, i've done last minute hotels for relatively reasonable rates..(using expedia)

NCL, Carnival... I remember seeing a little I believe Italian line once. Princess might - I know I've seen a Princess ship on the Hudson. I was only aware of RCCL leaving from Bayonne.
