Help with Borrowing Points

Newbie Alert:

Okay... so we just bought DVC last week. For our first trip, we want to take my sister and her family in Nov 2009..so it will eat up a lot of the points.

Question: If I borrow for my trip in 2009 from 2010... and then in 2010.. I need to borrow a few more from 2011... can I do that?

If you need to borrow, yes. There are no limits to number of times you can borrow.

But it all depends on your UY.

As Deb says depends on UY and when you plan to go away. Also do you have 08UY points or not or developer points as that will help with Nov 09?

In your DVC Member card, it should read Use Year: and then have a month after. Go figure. Should it be call User Month

It is when you points become available for the current year. We have a March UY so can book from March or one year to the end of the following year with that years points. Some people have an October UY and so on. I guess it just staggers things to make it easier.

Having bought last week, you have a use year. I am guessing it is Feb or March but your actual contract will say. Assume it is March. That means your annual allotment of points comes 3/1 every year. If you are taking a Nov 2009 trip the points you get in 3/1/09 will be the current points for that trip and you would be borrowing if you need more from points that would come from the use year that starts 3/1/10. As long as your 2010 trip starts on or after 3/1/10, you can borrow points from the 3/1/11 use year for that 2010 trip.

People with a Dec UY have the most problems usually. They don't get their current year points until 11 months have passed in the year. So they are just getting 2008 points as of this week and these points will expire on Nov 30, 2009. We have one Dec UY contract and it isn't a problem for us, but I have seen several confused new owners on the DIS.

You can make your ressie when ever you want as long as it is 11 months out at your home resort or 7 months for non home resort, your UY has nothing to do with when you can book.

We combined our 2008 and 2009 points for an "extended" family vacation this coming year (2009) and I made those ressies at BCV at the 7 mo mark, but because our UY is in Dec, and I've used all our 2009 points for the upcoming vacation, according to the MS CM, I cannot make another ressie in 2009 with our 2010 points until Dec 2009....you can only "borrow" a year in advance....

If I had thought about it logically, that would seem to be appropriate business practices, but I was making a "newbie" error and thought that I could make multiple ressies with "advanced" borrowing. The MS CM was very kind in explaining this to me, but I felt dumb anyways!

I was just like a kid in a candy shop, I guess!!

Ah yes you can only book with a borrowed, banked and current year in one go, you cannot borrow more than the year aheads points. You can make multiple ressies as long as you do not go over your allowances. I guess you had used all your 07UY points? Otherwise they could of been banked into the 08UY.

So I didn't have 2007 points but did have 2008 points and could make the ressies for 2009 based on the fact that our ressies were after our UY - but we borrowed also from 2009 UY as well (having a gradutation celebration with other family members), so that's where I see how everyone talks about addonitis! At this time, I do wish upon a star!

I'd love to "add-on" WLV, but don't have the means to do so at this time - I'm sure you all understand....(where's that fairy godmother when I need her??)

I am going to make a reservation for Nov 2009. I am going to use all my points from 2009 and borrow from 2010. When I make my plans in Nov 2010. I am going to use my left over from 2010 and borrow from 2011.

Am I right?

If you have a Dec UY then the Nov 2009 points will be from the Dec 08UY. So you will be borrowing from the 09UY for a Nov 2009 reservation. If you went into Dec by a couple of days you could even borrow from the 10UY!

A Nov 2009 trip will fall in your Dec 2008 UY (Dec 1, 2008 until Nov 30, 2009). So you would only be able to borrow 2009 points for that trip. Unless (like Claire stated), your trip was extended into Dec 09. Then you could borrow Dec 10 points for the nights in Dec 09.

To make it clear as mud:

Trip soley in Nov 09 - Use Dec 08 points, plus borrow from Dec 09.

Trip falling in Nov 09 and Dec 09 - Use Dec 08 points, plus borrow from Dec 09 for nights in Nov 09. Use Dec 09, plus borrow from Dec 10 for nights in Dec 09.
