Help with beach please!

We would like to spend a few hours at a beach after checking out of the Candy Cane Inn before leaving to head toward the Grand Canyon. We have our car but the plan is to head to the beach, leave around 2:00 and drive 4 or 5 hours after that before finding a hotel. We are considering Huntington or Newport beach but are wondering if either of them have bathrooms and changing facilities/showers? Since we are going to be driving after the beach, we'd rather change into our clothes than drive in our sandy bathing suits.

We have three kids so need a beach with lifeguards also.

Can someone recommend which beach is best, exactly where to go to park and if any areas have changing facilities/bathrooms?

We went to newport which is much more family friendly IMHO. I super love Huntington and DH and I went there just us two..but Newport is a lot easier to keep track of kiddos on. I can't tell you about lifeguards tho, I didn't see one when we were there. Someone else will know more than me.

Lifeguards are on duty primarily during daylight hours, 365 days per year. During the summer months, mid June through Labor Day, there are 36 lifeguard towers which open throughout the day. There are lifeguards on patrol in rescue vehicles at other times. Typical lifeguard tower staffing in the summer begins between 9am and 11am, and towers start closing between 5pm and 7pm. Remember, always swim near a lifeguard. If you need more information about lifeguard operations, call 644-3047.

Newport Beach is great. They also have a concrete boardwalk for greasy food items and you can catch boat rides and sunset cruises for cheap. Lots of fun.

My favorite beach though is Corona Del Mar which is just a little south of Newport Beach/separated by where the boats come in and out. It is the perfect crescent shaped beach with gorgeous homes on the cliff and the water is perfect there. Perfect for wading and body boarding. Showers and bathrooms are there as well.

I totally agree. We like Corona Del Mar too..another great family beach. The parking is even better than at Newport.

We were at Huntington Beach last Saturday. There are lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. However the bathrooms are very stinky and I'd hate to set my bag on the floor to change clothes. Maybe there were other bathrooms but we were to the right of the Pier and it was the closest public bathroom. We ate lunch at Ruby's and they were very clean.

Thanks so much for the info! Sounds like we can't go wrong with either of them. I've also seen Corona del Mar suggested before but it looks a little further out of the way for us. Maybe it is worth it though since everyone has such good things to say about it. Unfortunately, we don't have all that much time for the beach on this trip, but the kids want to a least say they put their feet in the pacific ocean!
