Help with afternoon tea

Some friends of mine want to hold an afternoon tea for a special occasion. I was wondering what do you serve at an afternoon tea? Also, is there special things you do for the sandwiches (like the way you cut them or anything else)? What kind of goodies do you serve? What kind of tea? Any help would be helpful for a Canadian friend. Thanks

This is one of my favourite meals!
We serve sandwiches made from thinly cut bread, cut into triangles, not squares (and if you want to be posh, cut the crusts off!). Then lots of different cakes like Victoria sponge, fruit cake, iced fondant or 'fairy' cakes, maybe shortbread biscuits, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam etc. Any cakes you like really.
Then for drinks - proper tea (and maybe coffee or some soft drinks for those who don't like tea).

I wouldnt have a clue about having a afternoon tea-the nearest i'd get to that is a cuppa!!

When we go to London we always have afternoon tea at Harrods (OK, how snobby does that sound!! lol). Anyway there they serve salmon and cucumber sandwiches, cheese and tomato and another one which I can't remember which are cut into triangles with the crusts cut off. Then there are finger cakes, like mini eclaires, mini cream cakes etc, then there is a scone with jam and cream. All this is served on one of those 3 tiered plate things. The tea is in a pot and is proper fresh tea leaves (not dried ones and they are the whole leaf). There is also an option of a glass of champagne to go with it all as well (I usually treat myself to that as well!!)

Thanks for all your imput. We just thought we would have an afternoon of fun and it was decided to have this "tea". The only problem I have is that I can't have wheat so I am making a gluten free bread to make some sandwiches for a couple of us. We knew about cucumber sandwiches but nothing else. I like the idea of eclairs though.

I doubt we would even get that far. They would see us all coming down the road & refuse entry
