There was a specific ISP (I think) that we had at school. It was the first time I've ever been on the internet. But we didn't call it the internet, we called it something else, but I can't think of the name. anyone have a clue? :confused3 I remember getting on there and looking at horoscopes and entertainment news, etc.

Information Superhighway?

Prodigy! That's it!!!!! THanks sooo much! Me and DH were racking our brains trying to remember that last night!

ARPAnet was the previous name of what we call the Internet.

Prodigy was an "on-line content service" and not really part of the Internet. However, they were the first On-line service to offer web access through their software. Ironically, does anyone remember who the initial major stakeholder in Prodigy was??? Sears!

We had Prodigy at school too. I remember it being a big deal in 7th and 8th grade ('93-'94).

Sears/IBM...what a strange joint venture that was.

That's the same year I remember using it at school. I was in 9th grade. :goodvibes

Other words I remember from back then are "gopher" & "newgroups".

Yup, Prodigy was one of three major pay services, and among the first to provide access to its members to the Internet (known as the World Wide Web). Compuserve was actually a much larger pay service. Then came AOL, of course, and the Internet was changed forever.

Very few of the users of the Internet "back then" used one of these pay services for access. Most of us gained access through our workplace.
