My Nephew has been throwing up everything today. They have tried feeding him crackers, water, watered down 7-up. He won't eat dry toast.
Can anyone recommend anything else for him? He has been running a fever off and on for the last couple of days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

First of all, if he's still throwing up, he should be eating or drinking nothing! That's the quickest way to dehydrate.

If he doesn't throw up for two hours, try an ice cube first. If he keeps that down an hour, go on to a little flat ginger ale. Wait at least two hours after he is sick before giving him anything. This is really important, I believe.

If he won't drink flat ginger ale, try a little of the Pedialite. I think it even comes in popsicle form.

I give my kids pedialite (the clear color one). He needs to stay hydrated. Also some flat ginerale or weak tea. Maybe he would want one of those pedialite ice pops. My kids will usually suck on one of those pops even when they are sick.

Since he's 2, I'd say ask the doctor's office first. Combined with a fever, I wouldn't be too "matter of fact" about it.

Having said that, if they can't get through to the doctor or his backup . . . . do you have any coke syrup? We're out right now, so I don't know if it says not to give to a 2yo - but know that it has worked for DH & the kids.

I remember that the doctor recommended Pedialyte (I think) once the kids could keep something down because their electrolytes were messed up.

Try some small sips of flat coke. (Just a few turns in a blender should take away the carbonation).
When he's feeling better try some popcicles, and jello.:D

pedialyte or white grape juice. Let us know how he's doing- little ones can get dehydrated so quickly:(

Popsicle are great at this age because it is hard to tell alittle one to only take a few sips of liquid. they are so thirsty they want to gulp and that makes it come right back up. I think they make some pedialye ones now. Usually they need to take nothing for a while then slowly start introducing liquids. He needs to be seen quickly if he isn't crying tears or urinating. Also check the inside of his mouth and make sure it is moist. If not take him to the Dr or ER . Sometimes kids get to a point where they are dehydrated and need some fluids IV to start keeping oral fluids down. The doc could also perscribe a suppository to get the vomiting stopped if he isn't dehydrated yet to get him over the hump and settle his stomach. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! I told my Sister about the Pedialyte Popsicles and the White Grape Juice. He had been drinking a lot of fluids fast. He is "only" thrown up a couple of few time sthe last couple of days. He is still urinating and drooling (cutting his 2 year molars :) .) He was eating some crackers but is tired of them.
Thanks again!

glad to hear the little guy is doing better:D

Our pediatrician says no juice, no pop, nothing with sugar. We were instructed to give a spoon of Pedialyte every 15 mins or so to keep him hydrated. Once he could go for an hour without throwing up to increase the amount. Another hour or so and then bread or crackers. If he started throwing up again then we had to go back to the beginning and a little Pedialyte every fifteen minutes.

Once he was ready for more food it was bread, crackers, bananas or apple until he was better. Rice was also on her list, but DS doesn't like it. I can't remember what else he could eat. Sorry.

pedialyte popcycles are the best! When they can't keep anything down and should only have a few tablespoons of liquid. Once they stop throwing up I always remember what a nurse told me once

BRAT

Banana's
Rice
Applesauce
Toast (dry)

My 4yo dd had this last month really bad. It lasted several days but her pediatrician said basically the same thing malficent1959 said. He told us to give her gatorade, 1 tsp at a time. Wait an hour in between and then give her another tsp until this could be done without any vomiting. He suggested waiting for the food until she had gone several hours with taking gatorade and no vomiting.

Oh man I feel for you. I went through this twice with my DD who won't be 2 until June. She no sooner got over it and about 6 weeks later-boom-stomach bug again. Did the gingerale, water,. Poor thing was so hungry but everytime she ate something-yuck. When she was finally over it you could see the look of relief on her little face.

Now my pediatrician told me

BRAT

Banana
Rice
Applesauce
Tea (very weak)

Our doc recommends Gatorade. Always works for us. Also ice pops and clear liquids.

Since tea is a diuretic, wouldn't you want to avoid it in order to avoid further dehydration?

That may be the key. SMALL amounts, every 15 to 20 minutes or so, is better than a large volume (distends the stomach rapidly and tends to end up being regurgutated).

DN is doing MUCH better today! He managed to keep down white grape juice and some applesauce and crackers. He actually asked for food (he wanted nothing before). And he did not run a fever at all last night.
Sounds like he is on the mend! :)

I am going to write down the BRAT method for DD!
Thanks again! :)

Glad to hear the little un is doin better, but next time he starts throwing up, I suggest giving him a bucket. :teeth:

Then give him some gatorade. Just like everyone here said, keep him hydrated.

We always did the spoonful of drink every 15 minutes. Then followed up with the BRAT diet (with dry toast). Glad he's feeling better today.
