I am in the market for a new laptop but I don't know what to look for. I want something that will be fast when on the internet and something that will be able to hold a lot of pics and documents as well. It will not be used for work purposes but more of recreational types of things. I would like something that will provide enough storage and speed for my son to also be able to use it for school purposes.

Any suggestions? I'm not really looking for name brand suggestions as much as I am generic hardware spec suggestions.

TIA!!!!
Amy

I have an HP laptop that works pretty good. My boyfriend recently got new HP with Windows 7 and it works pretty good for storage uses.

Ok, sorry I didn't notice that the first time. You don't need anything great if all you want to do is surf the web and do homework. Don't buy anyting that is for gamers or anything. If you're going windows based (not Mac) then you'll need at least 4gb of ram. The processor should be the newer intel core i series processer. As far as harddisk space, you should be fine with anything that comes with the computer. Most computers come with more HD space than you'll ever use.

Macbook! A couple of years ago I bought a cute HP laptop because it was a few hundred dollars cheaper than a macbook. That was a *big* mistake, as I ran into so many problems with my hp!

If you want a laptop that will run for a long time without viruses, choose a macbook.

I have a MacBook Pro 13".

It holds all of my pictures and I can internet to my heart's content. Plus, I'm not VERY savvy and it was so easy to set ip. Plus, the size of 13" suits me just fine for travel and it fits in several of my bags.

And it sounds just like Wall-E when you turn it on. :lmao:

Add me to the "I love my macbook" list! :)

Two years in, and I've NEVER had any single issue with how it runs, it's never crashed, and I've never had a virus.

Also, it reboots/starts in less than a minute and you can turn it on and go when you buy it.

MacBook

Battery life is outstanding, 7-8 hours vs. 3 or so for other laptops.
Smaller, lighter
Display is amazing, great for pictures and editing.
Easy to learn and use, boots up in seconds vs. minutes for a Microsoft product
Service (hardware and software) is a big plus, but we live close to an Apple store and can ask questions in person vs over the phone to overseas

Con is price.... definitely more $$.

15" MacBook Pro running at 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

I love love love my macbook.

It's for personal use (surfing the DIS!) although I occasionally use it for work.

Weeell, I am apparently one of the only people in the world without a MacBook. :goodvibes I have a Sony Vaio - mostly because I hate Apple. :snooty:

Anyway, DF and I got a Vaio with a 500gb hard drive (that we'll never come close to filling) and 8gb of memory (haven't had speed issues in 2 years) and it also has a Blu Ray drive on it -- and we spent a lot less than we would have on a MacBook. We'd had it for 2 years now, like I mentioned, and it still works like a charm. We've never had any issues with it whatsoever. :thumbsup2

two new MacBook Pro's~ one 15.4 inch and the other is 17!! I buy new ones every year, just because I can!!! I also have the imac!:thumbsup2

and yes, it is because it is so user friendly and you do not have those stupid pop up ads,...and very rarely will it get a virus! No viruses is not full proof however! people THINK they are, but they are not... They are still SO MUCH BETTER then a PC!!

Add me to the list of MacBook haters. They are very expensive for what you get. An HP is a much better deal.

I got an HP dv7t laptop back in February. It came with a 500gb hard drive, 4 gb of RAM, Intel i3 processor, NVIDIA GEForce graphics card...very sweet graphics card, Windows 7 and a 17.3 inch screen. I have not had one issue with it. Took all of 3 minutes to set up and it only cost $800.

I have been running HPs for over 10 years and have never once encountered a problem, not even with my Vista machine. Viruses have been a non-issue, just have a good firewall/virus program and you will be fine. I run Norton and have never had an issue.

I buy new ones every year, just because I can!!!

Will you PM when you are ready to get rid of one your 1YO machines?! :thumbsup2 There's nothing better, IMO, than turning on a brand new MacBook/iMac. All shiny and pretty and ready to work!
