help! What do cool 6th graders wear?

Gosh, I'm so glad my going into 7th grade DD still loves clothes from Target! :p She likes the LONG flared jeans and t-shirts...oh yeah, thick soled sneakers! Really lucked out today...I found size 16 flared Levi's (the dark ones, not the ones that have been through WWII!), on clearance at TJ Maxx today for $5!! Also found Starter sneakers (fat soles! ) for $10.00. My DD has never really cared what people thought of what she wore to school. She even still wears her Disney t-shirts!! :) She has always been so sure of herself. Now her brother, 13, spends more time on his hair than she does! ;)

I work with 7th graders they are really into Mudd and Aeropostale around here. The big thing is pajama bottoms with funky designs and little matching tank tops. I wouldn't get too excited about the dress policy, most schools are liberal in enforcing it:rolleyes: . I called myself the butt crack patrol, constantly telling girls to pull up their pants so I wouldn't have to see 3 inches of crack. I sit in the back of the classroom! They are really into flip flops in every color and even wear fuzzy slippers to school. I loved wearing pj's and slippers on "switch" day.

My son isn't different at all......We went to Jackson yesterday and I went into J.C. Penny to get him some shorts and he looked at me like I lost my mind. He wants Abercrombie and Banana Rupublic and .... oh shoot I can't remember maybe its Gap (are there boys clothes in Gap?)

Abercrombie is not cheap either!! And the clothes are TORN and WORN looking but thats COOL!!!!!!!

So we bought Abercrombie.

I always take the girl that I babysat for 9 years shopping right before school starts--she's going into 7th grade and she loves Kohl's. She likes Aeropostale, too, but she knows she can get a lot more if we go to Kohl's. She's very fashion-conscious, very particular about what she wears. Also, on her birthday I took her to Fashion Bug because it was close and we didn't have time to go to the mall--she admitted later she'd been skeptical about going there, but she loved it, especially the accessories and shoes.

Well my dd couldn't fit into L2 even if she wanted too. That is more of a 4th & 5th grade thing around here.

6th grade she liked Aeropostale and flare jeans.

This year for 7th she has actually bought something PINK!!!! Yes there is a GOD. We shopped at Famous-Barr and Sears so far. Juniors section. She doesn't want to shop at Aeropostale this year, hmmmm.
I have bought her 7 or 8 pairs of jeans with matching shirts so far. She has already been wearing them. Bye Bye shorts, even though it is 90 degrees out still.

Reading this thread makes me so glad to be in college. It really doesn't matter what you wear now, especially to an 8 am class!

Although I have problems with those pants with words on the butt. I don't know, it just doesn't seem like something you'd want attention drawn to.

Wow things are different all over.
My first stop is still going to be "Plato's CLoset', the teen resale shop. After that I don't know, probably Kohls and then L2. She did get her sneakers yesterday--Skechers. I just want to get this out of the way ASAP.
Robin M.

Rave Girl. My 11yr old loves it. I think it's overpriced junk! Thank God she wears a uniform! I can't imagine the fights we'd have school shopping.

Thanks for the heads up on the wheeled backpacks. Looks like I'm buying a new one this year!

Good Luck everyone,
Lisa

Too funny I could rent mine as a billboard!

Kids at DS's school still use the backpacks on wheels. They have to take all of their text books home each day(no lockers, not sure they're going to install any this year). There's no way they'll be able to carry them on their backs.

My DD takes the majority of her books home as well. She is either afraid she'll forget a book or she just has that much homework. There are days I have a hard tme lifting the backpack.

Same here. Last year, in 7th grade, my daughter weighed 80 pounds and her backpack, when fully loaded which was almost every day, weighed 20 pounds.

I am told that the "cool" kids do NOT shop in the GAP.

Maybe not in your area, but here, it ranks right up there with American Eagle, Old Navy, Abercrombie, and Aeropostale.

You DON'T buy from -- Target, WalMart, K-Mart, or Sears. :(

My son would have a fit if I got him clothes from Target or Walmart. I don't know why, who's going to know where they came from? It's not like have a big Target symbol their clothes.

He loves Gap and Old Navy.

Believe me. They KNOW! My DD said they also know if you wear the same thing twice in one week -- even if you have the same top and different bottoms, or vice versa.

At my office, I couldn't tell you who has what on what day or how many times they've worn it in a week!

As for the kids -- this too shall pass...

Maybe its because I live in the Jappy capital of the world, but I can spot a fake prada/coach/louis bag a mile away, and when I was in middle school I could tell where the clothes were from just by looking at them. Believe me, in middle school, you knew what kids shopped in Target. Those are the worst years, especially for clothes. In middle school kids care much more about being "cool" rather than what they really like.

My sister is entering 6th grade, and I took her shopping at Limited Too for a few things, and I invaded Abercrombie (kids, not Abercrombie & Fitch, which has the adult clothes). She's tiny, so she really can't fit into juniors yet. I also got her a Juicy Jumpsuit, so now she matches me :)

I think alot of it depends on the area in which you live. I went to college orienatation and half the kids didn't know what Juicy Couture was, where the other half was well informed.

Briar Rose is right, Gap around here is NOT popular.

And the wheel backpacks? We all felt sorry for the poor kids. The worse thing you can do to a kid is buy them a wheeled backpack, as far as a middle schooler is concerned

EP, you sound like my sister, she loves her hand bags, clothes, and shoes, she can spot fakes in a minute.:D

I'm sure the bookbag thing wouldn't be an issue if son didn't have to take the bus or train to school each day. There's no way he (and most of the kids that attend his school) can carry such a huge amount of books on their backs. They are very lucky that their school is only on one floor of the building so they don't have to carry the bags up and down the stairs between classes.
