We got the information packet for jr. high today! DD#1 is all excited although orientation is not until Aug. 18 when she gets her schedule, and she is still afraid none of her friends will be in her "team" (4 elementary classes merge into one jr. high). Luckily most of them will at least be in choir or band with her.
They start at 7:25--go until 2:10--their lunch period can be anytime between 9:55 and 12:30!!! I have to make sure she gets breakfast--she will have to get up at 6 with me now.
She need clothes badly. Luckily the dress code backs up my policy of no showing anything like bellies, etc.--they even ban tank tops, but allow sandals. Anyone know what cool 6th graders wear? Shopping is coming soon.

my older dd will be in 8th grade and younger dd will be in 6th grade when school starts sept. 3. we have the same kind of schedule you do.

the girls at our middle school wear a lot of stuff from Limited Too and Abercrombie. most of the time my older dd seems to be wearing those pants with words across the butt, or jeans -- but they can't be plain, they have to have something on the leg to jazz them up (like glitter, or appliques, or whatever.) Abercrombie t shirts are a big thing -- though I'm sure you can get the same "look" elsewhere. I am told that the "cool" kids do NOT shop in the GAP.

Hi Robin!

I'll be seeing my going-in-to-7th grade nephew tonight, so I'll see if he has any advice! ;)

she asked what was "cool", not what was practical, CJ.

oh, and Robin --- backpacks on wheels are "uncool". and most won't fit in a locker anyhow.

you might want to go to the office supply store and buy something called a "lockermate", it adds shelves to the locker. more storage space. and a mirror to hang inside the locker is also cool.

Practical and "cool" go hand and hand at our house! :D

I think I either have trained them well or was very lucky.... I have two teen boys that could not care less what the brand names on their clothes say!

but CJ, I thought you homeschooled?

besides, boys are "different". girls look at what other girls are wearing.

I am sorry I entered this conversation. ;)

The boys are dual enrolled. They are at school, but are doing work from home part of the day.

I'll go look for a thread I am qualified to respond to now. :p

Have a great day! :bounce:

I quess I should have my DD answer since she says I'm too old to have any fashion sense. ;)

Limited 2 seems to be the place to shop, I've been told that it won't be much longer and that Abercrombie is the place for kids a couple of years older. L2 has a pretty good clearance going on right now, lots of stuff for $15 and less.

My DD can also wear junior clothes so that helps, she loves the jr departments in most of the stores. Only problem with that is she really needs a size 0 or 1 and they are harder to find on sale.

One of the outfits she was excited about was a pair of jeans that had a shawl like thing that tied around the waist. Kind of an open weave with beads. She paired it with a brown sleeveless top with a shawl like collar.

I don't shop for my 11yo anymore at all, she went with her grandmother yesterday. I told her she could spend $100 and she did, she knows to look at the sale racks and did pretty well.

Maybe invite a friend to go along and just be prepared to sit back and just watch and veto the stuff you can't live with.

My DD is also going into 6th grade in the fall. We have done her school shopping already. Low waisted sweatpants with a zipper sweatshirt, 2 denim skirts( 1 was above the knee and 1 was below), khaki type pants, a pair of jeans(flared on the bottom), 2 pairs of capri's, belts with the long stings hanging down to just above the knee and a messenger bag instead of a backpack. Also, she wanted a small pocketbook to hold lip gloss ( any other essentials she might need). We are waiting on the shoes. She wants either black or brown with the big chunky sole. Kohl's, Limited2 and Aeropostale were the only stores she wanted to shop in.

oh no. Boys aren't that different. That I-just-fell-out-of-bed-and-put-on-this-outfit-that-has-been-crumpled-up-and-laying-under-my-mattress-for-two-months look takes at least an hour of primping in the bathroom every morning to achieve.

Well I'm a junior in high school so I guess what's "cool" for 6th graders has probably changed a little since I was in 6th grade, but I'll try to help.....

My friends and I used to be obsessed with Limited Too...they're kind of expensive sometimes but they have lots of cute things.

We didn't have an aeropostale when I was in middle school, but I shop there now and I see a lot of younger girls wearing it, too. They have a lot of basic things like jeans, t-shirts and hoodies.

I used to love Old Navy, too, but I'm not sure if it's really "in" anymore.

And a lot of kids wear abercrombie...I was never allowed to shop there when i was younger (because it "sent the wrong message") and now I hardly ever shop there because the clothes are ridiculously overpriced, but a lot of people love it.

Some boys are different, some aren't. I have one who will wear anything that fits as long as it does not have some trendy brand name on it. Then there's the other one . . . When he was in middle school, it was Abercrombie for him, but now that's passe in his crowd. Think he could get anything for a about dozen Abercrombie shirts on e-bay?

Thanks for the help so far! Kohls is close by but I was afraid I'd have to go to L2--it's at a mall on the other side of town. Oh well!
As for shoes, I get her decent sneakers and then we'll wait until school starts for the rest--although Payless has a buy 2 get one free sale this weekend!
Briarrose, thanks for the backpack tip--I got her a LLBean backpack 2 years ago that still looks fine; she was warned it would have to last her 3 years. I agree with you--I teach in a high school, and even I feel sorry with kids who have backpacks with wheels! The locker thing is a good idea too; she'll have one of those lockers with a skinny section below and a bigger section on top.

DS is entering 7th grade. He attends a public school with a very strict uniform policy. ONLY black shoes or boots and only white sneakers for PE.
Since they have zero say in their clothes, shoes are the big issue.
My son HAD to have a pair of timberlands last year. He had to have the "right" sneakers. I don't know why the kids make such a big fuss about the sneakers, they only wear them in school once a week for an hour:confused:

You pose a difficult question:D ! Things were a lot simpler back when I was in school(jeans, t's & sneaks mostly). Now kids are much more fashion savvy-even in elementary school ! I think the best idea would be to visit your local mall and ask the sales people at several stores what's hot right now. What is in style in one area/school is totally different in another. There are also many different 'looks'-bohemian/gypsy(my fav. I'm glad it's back in style, I don't have to search for anything because it's everywhere), urban/hip-hop, goth, punk(my 14 yr. old DS), preppy ect.. The list is endless !!! In the end your DD should pick out what she really likes the best-which may or may not be what everyone else is wearing.

Well, my youngest niece who will be in 7th grade says Limited 2 is way to childish now. She still likes Abercrombie, but has problems because she is tiny. I wonder if the part of the country one lives makes a difference.

Well, what I have been seeing a lot at the stores is flare jeans and peasant tops! I'm having a 70's flashback! :)

My daughter is going into 8th grade and we haven't yet started the back-to-school shopping/battle. The thing we fight the most about are her jeans. She likes them tight and low-waisted. I prefer to buy her jeans she can breathe in. Can't wait to go shopping.

She won't go near a Limited Too now, but in 6th grade it was the place to shop. In 6th grade it was also cool to wear shirts with sayings like "angel" or "princess". Not so in 7th or 8th grade. Her favorite stores are PacSun and Weathervane. I try to catch sales at those stores because otherwise I'd have to mortgage the house to pay for a couple pair of jeans at either one of those stores.

And yes, I pity the poor middle-schooler who shows up with a backpack on wheels. Definitely not cool. She wants a messenger bag this year instead of the traditional backpack.

I have taught in a middle school for the past 2 years. Around here, the COOL thing is hooded sweatshirts.

ALL the kids walk around with their hands in the front pockets and they SUCK on the hood strings! Drives me nuts,
but THEY ALL wear them!
