I feel like such an idiot.. I have never flown before and we are leaving Friday for Disney for 10 days.. there are 4 of us me, dh, ds17 and ds10 we are flying on a little 36 passenger jet.. I dont know how to pack.. we have boarding bags for each of the four of us.. to large suitcases and 4 roller carryons. I have taken things in and out and rearranged so many times today.. I need some advice.. I have this fear of our luggage getting lost. I dont no why... I have packed a few outfits in each case.. but then part of me doesnt want to have to check anything.. But I am afraid because of the size of the plane that they are going to make us check our small roller carryons.. ok.. if they do.. and something gets lost.. oh no... we are out some clothes.. even if I divided them throughout.. but then we have extra shoes. a airmattres.. a small fan.. and Which suitcase do I put our bathroom bag in... (our luck thats the one that wont show up) there isnt enough room in the boarding bags for it .. because we each have an outfit,, swimsuit, camera.. and personal items... I am sorry I am rambling . .but does anyone know what I should do?? I have called Delta serveral times trying to get different operaters to tell me for sure if they will gate check or check but I cant get a straight answer... they only say.. each of us can have a carryon and a personal item... Is a boarding bag considered a personal item? According to the website.. a diaper bag is a personal item.. or a camera bag.. well our camera bags our in our boarding bags and they are not as big as a diaperbag... So can anyone help.. I need advice from anyone who has ever flown on this type of plane.... Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.. and again sorry for the rambling.. its going to be Thursday before I know it and I still wont be packed if I dont make up my mind...

OK.

Chances are that you are going to have to gate check. (I have no idea what you mean by "boarding bags"? I am going to assume these are the small roller boards)

If you gate check on these planes I have NEVER heard of things getting lost. They take your rollerboard from you at the steps or jetway, put them under the plane and deliver them back to you at the bottom of the steps in Orlando. I have even given these guys my laptop as the large case won't fit on the small planes.

You are allowed one carry on and one personal item. The personal item fits under the seat in front of you, purse, backpack (the kind kids take to school) reasonable PC cases (NOT MINE LOL!) etc are examples of personal items.

From Delta's website.

The carry on bag
:

* Weighs less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
* Does not exceed 45 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
* Fits easily into our SizeWise® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
* Fits in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

Here are some examples of personal items:

* Male or female purse
* Briefcase
* Laptop computer (All laptop/computers must be carried aboard and cannot be checked. For information about Delta's battery-saving system for laptops, visit Connectivity)
* Camera case
* Diaper bag
* Items of a similar or smaller size to those listed above, such as Portable Electronic Devices.

Now on the small jet the carryon will be gate checked as I described, but it's no biggie.

At smaller airports they can be VERY strict about this. So when you roll up to the security checkpoint with your purse, your camera bag and your "carryon" expect to get told the purse has to fit someplace else.

I fly a lot. Never had luggage lost and can count on one hand the number of times it was delayed... Don't panic.

In all cases the cameras etc. should go in the personal item or carryon.

Thanks so much for your quick reply.. I think I will pack each persons stuff in the roller carryone that will be gate checked... our boarding bags have no rollers .. they are small like a school back pack... hopefully everthing will fit..
if not .. back to the big bags... Thanks again for your quick reply.. looks like I have to repack...

First relax! we have flown a lot! for 20 yrs and never had a bag lost. one time in the winter they were delayed due to weather but delivered to us in a few hours.
On the 36 pass. plane you will not be allowed to take anything with wheels. they want everything very small on those flights. You will gate check anything bigger. You leave it on a cart by the airplane door and they take it from that cart directly into the plane does not go anywhere else and then back out to a cart at the other end. I would take additional bags that you check for baggage and not stress over getting so much into your carry ons. You don't have babies what is the worst that could happen if your luggage was delayed- a teen would have to wear the same shorts twice - like that never happens hah hah! Take your valuables like camera's in your personal carry on throw a bathing suit in if you want a few tolietries, purse, magazine, gum and check the rest. Have fun.
