Bear with me as I try to explain this.

DD, 17, has been conditionally appointed to West Point (military academy). :thumbsup2 She needs a nomination from a senator or congressman in order for her to complete the appointment. As part of the nomination process, the senators from our state are having interviews this Saturday. She has been given a specific time (2:20pm).

She is also the 2nd string goalie for her soccer team who has made it into the Elite 8 for the state playoffs! The game is this Saturday at 3pm and it is two hours away from interview place.

Senator's office will not budge on the time or day for an athletic event, regardless of its importance. Coach will remove her from the roster for this game and then quite possibly for the rest of the playoffs, which means she won't even be considered a part of the team from here on out. He feels that she is putting herself before the team if she chooses to attend the interview. She has worked hard to be on this team (since she was 8 years old) and was starting goalie until an injury caused the coach to bump her to second string. The team was winning and he didn't want to mess with karma, so he kept her at second string.

How would you advise her? I'm leaning on having her go to the interview, as I think her future is more important than the soccer team, but then again, being there for the team is important, too.

Update DH called coach. Coach agreed that she must go to interview and will only have her off the roster for Sat's game. She'll be back if (when) they play in the next game. Guess DD better practice interviewing!

Update 11/07 Interview went very well. They even asked her about the soccer game and she said she knew her team was in great hands with the other goalie and that her teammates wished her the best. After the interview, one of the panelists told her she did a great job and that she would make a great Army officer someday. :thumbsup2 (of course he was from the Navy, so we're not sure how to take that :goodvibes . We'll find out late December if she got the nomination. Thanks again for all your well wishes!

Amen! That soccer coach is an idiot for doing that. An interview with a high-ranking politician for a West Point appointment is LESS important then a friggen soccer game?

No doubt the interview and the coach needs to get HIS priorities straight--she is talking the rest of her life not a couple weeks until the state tournament for crying out loud!

I would have to say the interview. You are talking West Point. I wish you DD all the best in whatever she chooses.

She has a choice between her future and her past. I would choose the future. And shame on the soccer coach for making her feel bad about it!

As a soccer coach myself, I have to say I think you daughter's coach is being unreasonable. :sad2: Of course the game and team are important as I'm sure they worked hard to get where they are, but the interview is very important to your daughter's future.

I think she should go to the interview ... especially considering she is not the starting goalkeeper.

The ramifications of her passing up the opportunity to attend West Point, assuming that attending this interview is dependent on her getting in, are pretty huge.

Coach is being selfish. Period.

IMHO, I have a hard time believing he will follow through on the threat to remove her from the roster for the rest of the playoffs, anyway. Is there a 3rd string keeper ? If not, he'd be cutting off his nose to spite his face not having a very experienced back-up keeper on his roster for the playoffs !

Best of luck to your DD !! That is tremendous honor and accomplishment and she should not be made to feel anything otherwise !

The interview... and I would certainly let the head of the athletic department know how her coach feels.

Let's see. Who to tell "Kiss Off" - the Senator or the coach? Who's time is slightly more valuable in this case????????? :confused3

Ask your dd how much she wants to go to West Point. Then you have your answer.

West Point or any college interview that cannot be rescheduled is more important than a single soccer game and any coach that does not realize that is priority challenged.

I am an Admissions Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy. If she does not get a nomination, she will not go to West Point or any of the other service academies. She needs to go to the interview. If she skips that interview, the other senator in your state and the congressman (woman) whose district you live in WILL know. It will hurt her chances for any nomination at all.

If the soccer coach benches her for the rest of the playoffs, just remind her that West Point has a women's soccer team that she can try out for: http://www.goarmysports.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=11100&KEY=&SPID=4608&SPSID=48149.

If West Point is her first choice school, she needs to go to that interview.

While I understand the coach's point of view, I think taking her off the team is a little extreme. At the end of the day, soccer is just for now. College is the next step. Its not like she's missing the game to go shopping or go to a birthday party.

She needs to decide what is more important to her. I understand that coaches have rules and the rules need to be consistent, so if she goes to the interview, she suffers the consequence there.

It is actually a really good lesson she'll learn here, especially important if she's planning to enter the military. She'll have to get accustomed to missing out on personal stuff - that's part of the deal.

I am surprised, though, that they won't re-schedule it.

Tough decision? I don't think so. She needs to go to the interview, it is for her future. As for teh soccer coach, I think he needs to be reminded that it is STUDENT ATHLETE, not the other way around.

Go to the interview.

That coach is a selfish moron, all too willing to stand in the way of his player's future to further his own ends. If this a school team, this matter needs to be brought to the attention of the Athletic Director and the School Board. If it is a club team, the matter should be brought to the attention of the club board.

I agree.

Congratulations to your daughter. My dd16 wanted to attend West Point (it is beautiful) but has decided to go ROTC instead. Not sure where her desire to do this came from?

Definately have her interview with the senator.
