Help...to buy or not to buy

Just when I thought I understood someone throws a wrench in it! We are seriously considering buy 160 pts. at SSR however, now i have a bunch of questions that I know have been answered elsewhere but can't locate right now! So here is my list of Qs....ANY and ALL input would be greatly appreciated so that we can finally make a decision!! Thanks.

1. We would like a 1 bdrm. for 5 nts. every year or a 2 bdrm every other; is 160 pts. enough to start? Maybe buy more later at AKV??

2. We would like to try to trade every few years for other locations (Caribbean)....IS THIS DIFFICULT??? HONESTLY?

3. The only advantage to booking at your home resort (which would be SSR) is the advance 11 mos. booking. We would rather stay at BCV or WLV(r these the correct abbreviations?) is THIS difficult?

4. They told us at the open house that right now we would get 160 pts. from 9/06 and 160 pts. from 9/07. Could I combine these two and go April 2008?

I'm sorry if these are stupid basic questions that have been answered a million times but any/all HELP/ADVICE would be trully appreciated!!!

What is the reason you want to stay at BCV or VWL? If you want the winter holiday season at VWL, you really need to have points at that resort. It is the smallest DVC resort and gets booked quickly for the winter holidays. The 7 month time frame is not always enough. BCV is hard to get in the summer or for F&WFestival. You can do it at 7 months, but you need to do it right at 7 months.

You can bank points into the next use year and use them in combination with that years points to double the number of points you have to make a reservation. Check the points charts at the top of the page to determine how many points you would require for your specific stay (time of year, location and type of lodging).

Trading out requires a minimum of 150 points if I remember correctly. But it may have gone up and could go up in the future. The only reservation that remains fairly static are the DVC resorts (only changing around Easter time which changes each year).

Unfortunately, the answers to all of this are mostly, : "it depends"

1. What season, how many days, what type of room, and what resort are needed inputs to determine specifically if you have enough points. Check the DVC points chart link at the top to determine your exact point needs. In general, for the lower demand seasons, I'd say Yes, 160 points is more than enough for 5 nights in a 1 BR each year OR 5 nights in a 2BR every other year.

3. Again, "it depends" on the season and room type you want. For some times/locations/rooms types you have little to no chance at 7 months. For example, VWL in December or BWV during Food and Wine Festival, or for a Boardwalk View or Standard Room most of the year at BWV, you are probably out of luck. For low demand times/rooms you have a good chance but not always.

4. You can bank your '06 points into your '07 User year for a vacation in April '08, which is within your '07 Use Year. However, remember about banking deadlines. For a sept Use year, I believe you must bank before the end of Feb if you want to bank all of your points.
