I need some advice. Almost every month when aunt flow comes around I get extremely bad cramps for the first day so much so that I become nauseated and either attempt to throw up or do throw up a few times. I feel like there are solutions out there that I can obtain by seeing a doctor. I have tried everything in a drug store and back and nothing is helping anymore. Right now I'm trying to study for finals and I am in so much pain at some points that I can't focus on what I'm studying. I tried to talk to my mom about it, telling her I've been having bad cramps that are causing me to feel nauseated and feeling like I need to throw up and her response is that it's normal. It makes me want to scream. I realized there are people out there that have it a lot worse then I do, but what could it hurt to see someone about it? I can go to a doctor on my own obviously as I am an adult and I'm under my parents health insurance so as long as I found one under their insurance I would just have to pay the copay. I think my dad is actually a little more understanding, but I'm to embarrassed to talk to him about it. I know it's irrational and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. My mother is honestly a wonderful mom, but when it comes to the subject of periods my mom has never been comfortable talking to me about it and it makes me so angry because it's not a big deal, but she could at least care. The bottom line is I think I need to see a doctor, I really wanted my mom's help to find someone, because she's my mom and I thought she would be able to help me find someone under our insurance, that is recommended in the area, I'm not really sure how to go about that. I know I can figure it out on my own, but it hurts to know she doesn't even think I need to see a doctor that I'm "fine." :headache:

I had the same problem in high school many times I had to call my mom to come get me because I couldn't even think on driving. More than any pills what had help me is diet. I don't drink caffeine only once i a while and try to eat as healthy as possible, exercise also helps but with my asthma that isn't that usual. It is help me so much when I eat badly one month I can feel the difference. I hope this helps.

I spent my teens vomiting and in so much pain with my periods I couldn't even walk. When I went into nursing school I was sent to an OB and he put me on low dose birth control pills and everything became normal. It was amazing.

Don't be afraid to speak with your dad about this or your mom. See, this is one of those situations girls could get help from by Planned Parenthood I believe even without parent signitures. Get some help. These symptoms can also mean you have endometriosis and it can be controlled with the right medications.

Meanwhile, use a heating pad and lay low when you are having your period. Good luck and let us know what happens with you.

Start taking Aleve about 2 days before your period starts. Take it right through the first few days. It works. It's been prescribed this way for many, many years. It reduces the prostaglandins that cause all that pain.

The aleve two days before (if you are regular with your "visit" and know when to start it, can help significantly for many) laying with a heating pad and on your tummy also helps.
But, you should really get to a gyn. They can prescribe something (my niece who suffered so bad I would get the call from school to pick her up just about each month, as her mom worked outside the home) I always felt so bad, she was given low dose birth control and it worked for her. No more issues, thankfully. It regulates the hormones. By seeing a doctor, they can be sure you do not have endometriosis which causes similar issues and can get progressively worse over time. You should not suffer each month :grouphug: Try and not be angry at mom, some people just are not comfortable or just don't "get it" its just how she deals/dealt with her own situation.....but things have changed and you Can get help, and easily.
I hope you'll reach out, because the "visitor" should not rule your lifestyle each month...;) Good Luck and feel better....:flower3:

Can you ask your mom for the name of her OBGYN? That is the easiest thing.

Or you can call your primary doctor and ask for names of OBGYNs and then call, ask if they take your insurance, and then make an appointment.

Or you can call up Planned Parenthood and see someone there.

In the end, yes you are going to have to begin the process of making your own appts. to see doctors. You can do it.:goodvibes

Aleve is what saved me after years of suffering. The doctor prescribed 550mg.

How is the Aleve different from Pamprin or is it the same stuff?

I will have to pick up Aleve for my youngest who is a cramp sufferer.

Aleve is the only thing for me as well. I suffered from my first day, and it got a little better after having 2 children, then right back to where it was. I only need one pill the first day now.

Sorry to hear you are going through so much. It sounds very familiar to me.

Definitely see an OB. There is no need to suffer like that. In college I was also put on low dose birth control to manage the unbearable pain I would get once a month. It was so bad that I had to skip class and work. Since you are an adult, you do not need your parent's permission to see a doctor.

It's very easy to find a doctor these days. Your parent's insurance probably has a website. Go on there and find an OB in your area. It will be worth it.

OP- are you on birth control? I started taking BC when I was 16 because I had really bad cramps and an irregular period (and I was sexually active..). The BC helped tremendously!!! I used to have the same symptoms as you and after I took the BC, the majority of them went away.

I still have the occasional cramp, etc. but for the duration of my period, I typically don't even remember I have it!

I hope you feel better! Good luck!

At 19 I started a low dose bc pill, worked wonders for cramps, lighter and shorter time of the month. When I eventually went off the pill at 31, it remained normal and didn't get worse. :worship:

I had got the prescription through my parents insurance, but eventually transferred the prescription to my schools's health clinic since it was much cheaper. My doctor also used to give sample packs to full time college students.

I suffered like that for years when I was younger. Advil saved my life. You start taking it a day or two ahead of time, every few hours. Just make sure you don't take it on an empty stomach. My doctor recommended taking 3 at a time, that is a prescription dosage.

You might not have to see an OB/GYN, some primary care doctors will see patients for women's health issues. I have a primary that will do pap's, etc. Might be a rare thing, but is worth a call.

I'm not sure what the active ingredient is for Pamprin.

Aleve is Naproxen Sodium. Any of the NSAIDS will do the trick; however, Aleve is touted as the best for it and I agree. I was given a prescription for it when I was 16 (back in the late 70s before it was OTC). It very much saved me from several days of being out of commission with horrible cramps and vomiting.

I could never really tolerate BC pills--they gave me nausea and I still had some cramping with them. My poor DD seems to have inherited that from me so it's Aleve for her also.

Ask your friends for recommendations. You can contact the insurance company yourself and ask for a listing of providers as well. Or you can call a recommended doctor and ask if they accept new patients as well as your insurance.

Good luck to you.

I remember those days too. For me it lasted about 4 days and thankfully I got a low dosage birth control pill that helped. I would still have to take Aleve on the first day but that was it. I am so thankful for bc pills and Aleve!
