I was wondering what would happen if a child became sick while so far away from home. Nothing like a unhappy child on vacation. I am asking because september will be out first vacation and my 6 year old get ear infections often (not the ones from swimming) Hopfully it wont happen but if he would get sick what could i do? :confused3

On our honeymoon I got a bladder infection and was in an urgent care place in Lake Buena vista -- took over 4 hours, and wasted most of the day. I can't imagine having a sick child sitting that long.

Knowing your child's tendency for ear infections, couldn't you call your pediatrician before your trip and get a prescription as a "just in case?" Ours has done that for us in the past.

both my kids are prone to ear infections (got it from me) and both ended up with huge ones on one of our wdw trips. luckily i had trip med insurance (cuz my hmo does'nt cover out of state for non life threatening) and we used the traveling doctor's service that comes to your hotel room. they were great, arranged for the perscription to be filled and delivered to our hotel. not cheap though-several years ago it was close to $200 PER CHILD plus full pay for perscription (would'nt take an out of state plan).

i got sick once at wdw and used the urgent care just outside the park-again trip insurance saved the day (around $200 plus meds), but it was a lengthy wait-at least they did have a pharmacy on-site to fill perscriptions.

my pediatrician (and none in our group) will do a "just in case" for antibiotics-not all ear infections are treatable by them, and the insurance companies audit their records to ensure a current diagnosis matches the perscription. i also would'nt want to chance it-most travel insurance med policies have provisions about "pre-existing conditions" and when the kids had their ear infections at wdw we had to provide a letter from the doctor that showed they had'nt been recently treated or been seen for ear problems (so if the just in case meds did'nt work-the travel insurance med would not have covered the kids med care at wdw).

Our pediatrician always always told us to call them first if our son got ill while we were away. Sometimes they can call something in to a chain drug store or direct you where to go for medical treatment.

Our son got an ear infection while we were in Miami on vacation when he was about 9 months old. He'd had chronic ear infections and we knew exactly what it was, but most peds (and rightly so even though I didn't really feel that way at the time) won't call in an antiobiotic prescription without actual confirmation of an infection. We argued on the phone with our home ped for quite a while about that. We were on HMO at the time and I called our customer service number and they gave us the number of a great ped near our hotel who got us in immediately. DS was miserable sleeping the entire trip, but not a big deal other than that. It was much less hassle (in my opinion) getting into a regular doctor than sitting and waiting at an urgent care or ER.

Our DD got sick at Disney with some sort of stomach bug. Before we left I checked our health insurance for out of state providers and found an after hours pedicatrics clinic, I printed out all the information and put it in with our travel information. Good thing since we needed it. We went there, paid the co-pay and came back to the hotel.

You might want to check with your health insurance before you leave to see what they cover.

Also, I'd bring the staples with you like childrens' motrin and tylenol, any OTC allergy meds you use and even a little first aid kit, better safe than sorry.

Hope that helps!

We always take an antibiotic with us. Before we leave we usually start with extra vitamin C. Also, understand that somethings might be a virus and antibiotics won't help. We also make sure we have things like Motrin cold for the kids if they catch cold. Hopefully you will have a germ free trip!

We were at Wilderness Lodge 2 weeks ago and thought my dd might have an ear infection. I asked at concierge and they gave 3 options -
1. visiting doctor - about $500.00 dollars, not covered by insurance
2. urgent care, with transportation provided - covered by insurance, but probably long wait
3. call pediatrician, "beg" them to call in a prescription to a pharmacy that makes daily deliveries to all of the resorts.

They had all the paperwork and phone numbers to fax your pediatrician - that sounded like our best bet. Luckily we didn't need to use it

Hope your luck is the same!

Ditto.

But if more is needed....a few years back my sister had to take my neice (2 yrs old at the time) to the ER at a hospital in Celebration for IV fluids to treat dehydration from a stomach bug. Her resort got her a cab (or some kind of transportation) and she said the hospital was really nice (very "Disney") and she felt that they received good quality care.

If you should need to visit a doctor while at WDW, there is an excellent clinic about a 15 minute drive from WDW property. It is called "After Hours Pediatrics". They are open very late and also on weekends. I've taken my own daughter there a couple of times.

The staff is great. They accept most forms of insurance (something I found to be a problem at CentraCare). Each exam room has a tv playing a children's movie and a rocking chair for the tired parent! I highly recommend this place, but I hope you don't need it!

It is located at Sand Lake and Dr. Phillips Blvd.
