sorry but not sure abou the abbrv.. OGT etc.. but here is our situation..
we booked an oceanview 9A Dream 8506. We are paying 3576 for 2 adult and 2 kids 12 and 13.
Now I see our cruise has "guarenteed" rooms that are a lot cheaper but more restricitve..
No name changes etc.. But we dont plan on that. We gave insurance if we cannot sail.

So the "guarentee" Oceanview is around 2800 but the verandah is 3019.. Still a big savings..

Would you guys cancel the original and do this? Any disadvantages to doing this? Also would you also do verandah? We have never sailed and is it safe to say that all verandahs will be better location, view than a "bad" oceanview... I am thinking with oceanview we could get some really low with small port windows.... 8506 was seemed nice from the pictures..

what to do????

sorry confused, but it's either 700 or 500 ( for us a great savings)and we can upgrade to a veranda. just now sure if there are implciations of doing this and what can go wrong by changing an assigned statesroom and not knowing..

Verandahs are nice, no implications on an upgrade, to go down, you can do it, if you are pre paid in full date, if you are within paid in full date you are subject to cancellation rules.

Guaranteed rooms you get that level of room, but they choose the location.

Switch as long as there is no penalty. We sailed GT on the Dream in December and got a great Cat 5 stateroom. The Dream doesn't have the issues with severe vibration in some areas that the Fantasy does, so I wouldn't hesitate to sail GT on her if it saves money. Go for it!

It sounds like the biggest question here is whether you are in your PIF time. Also, you'll be cancelling the cruise and booking anew, so if you have first seating, for example, you might not get first seating with this new booking.

I've never sailed in a guarantee room nor have I changed room categories. I would call Disney to make sure that there won't be any fees for changing, and if there aren't any, I would then change to the verandah room.

If you are past your Paid in Full date then you will incur monetary penalties for cancelling the cruise. You have to see if booking the lower rate is worth it even with the penalties. If you think so then do it. If not keep what you have. They don't usually offer the IGT, OGT or VGT rates until after the final payment date so chances are if you cancel you will incur penalties. those rates are used to entice new customers to a sailing and that is why you can't just switch to the lower rate. You must cancel and rebook hence incurring the penalties.

We have booked OGT and VGT rates many times and always got nice cabins...I don't think we ever had a "bad" room.

Also, on the Dream and Fantasy they do not have any lower deck Oceanview cabins with smaller portholes. Those are on Deck 1 of the Magic and Wonder. We actually love Deck 2 on all the ships.

In addition to potential penalties if past your PIF date, you should check if your insurance will cancel as well. If purchased through DCL, I think it will be canceled and you would need to buy a new policy. If purchased separately, you might be able to transfer the insurance to a new booking.

Enjoy your cruise!

If there's no penalty then yes of course. Why wouldn't you save money if you could?

This! You say you have purchased insurance already. When we have purchased insurance in the past, we would have to get a new policy if we canceled those plans. However, since you are just moving to a different room, it may be fine, but check with the insurance company first. It would be a shame to lose most of your savings to re-buy the insurance.

Also, remember you no longer will be picking your exact room. For some people this is no problem. Other people get assigned to a particular room and then complain when it is across from the Laundry Room or next to the elevator, or under the kids club or something. So make sure that you truly don't mind which room you get before you switch. A room you don't like may not be worth the savings.

As others have said, be very clear on any cancellation fees you may incur by cancelling your current room and if your insurance policy will cover the new room. You don't want to end up in a situation where you pay more in cancellation fees and insurance than you would save by switching.

Personally, I would rather pay more and pick my stateroom. Stateroom location is very important to us in terms of location on the ship (we prefer to be on a deck that is "sandwiched" between other decks with staterooms to keep the noise down and a room that will have very little foot traffic going by). If paying a little more means a better stateroom experience, less noise, more sleep, etc. it's worth it to us.

I had a guaranteed room in category 4 (with insurance). When cabins became available after the pay in full date, I called and paid the $100 more (in my case) to be able to pick my cabin. Since it was an upgrade, they just revised the reservation....no cancellation and rebook. And it did not effect the insurance policy at all. I sail next month.

You were booked in a regular fare, just that your cabin selection was "guaranteed". So yes, your's was processed as a change in your reservation (obviously if you were in a Cat 4, it went from a Cat 4B fare to a Cat 4A fare or something similar) with a small change in fare. The OP is talking about changing from a regular fare to a restricted guarantee fare. So there are a lot more conditions - including that it has to be a new reservation. So they cannot just change what they already have. They would have to cancel their current reservation - an incur whatever penalties there are and book a new reservation to get the "deal" they found. Depending on the insurance they purchased, they may lose that when they cancel the first reservation. That's why everyone is pointing out that the restricted fare may be lower but not a better deal.
