Ok I know that the skyway used to go through the Matterhorn but my DH is claiming that Disney closed up the openings on the Matterhorn where it went through - I say the openings are still there - who's right?

Hmmm....I thought they were still there too. Maybe I just assumed they were! Somewhere on DISBoards there is a photo someone posted of the Matterhorn, taken from a certain angle where it shows one of the openings to look like a vague outline of a Hidden Mickey shape. I THOUGHT the Hidden Mickey was one of the old Skyway passageways, but maybe it is separate??

You are both right:

The Skyway continued to travel through the mountain for the next sixteen years, but its passageway was now enclosed in similarly themed ice caves. Following the closure of the Skyway in 1994, the cavernous holes through which the Skyway buckets had traveled were partially filled in. The holes in the Tomorrowland face remained mostly intact, and a grotto filled with glimmering crystals was installed nearby. An abandoned crate labeled "Wells Expedition" was also added as a tribute to Frank Wells, who had died earlier that year. The bluish glow of the crystals is easily seen from the ground at night.
