I was just told by one of my geek friends that I cannot do this... is this true?
My son tapes his shows from the DVR to VHS so I had the bright idea to get him a DVD Recorder for Christmas so he can put them on DVD. I understand that that is not possible?
Or is it???
HEELLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!

Funny you would ask this question. Just last weekend I bought a deck that plays and records both VHS and DVD. I have a cable company DVR(not Comcast) and I have already dubbed a couple of things over to the DVD. I am not making a digital transfer, but rather an analog transfer. I too was dubbing from DVR to VHS until last weekend. BTW, the deck I purchased is nice because you can transfer all of your VHS tapes to DVD(as long as the tapes aren't copyguarded). Kind of like when you had a double deck cassette machine that could make copies.
Good luck with this, and PM me if you have any questions.
