Help-Questions about who drives rental car.

I have reserved a car with Dollar for our trip this november.

Payment for the car will go on my credit card.

I don't want to do the driving-both DH and would prefer if he drives!

On my confirmation it states that any additional drivers cost 5.00 per day.

DH can't reserve the car or pay as the credit card is in my name only.

What do we do?

Am I clear that because I am the one booking and paying I have to be the "designated" driver? Is there any way to have him be the driver?

I work for a car rental company, and this is what I think would work out for you.

1. If the credit card that you are using to rent the car belongs to you, you will be the primary renter and be reponsible for the rental. In that case, if you put your husband behind the wheel, he will be the additional driver.

2. My company, which is not Dollar nor National, would waive the additional driver fee if the additional driver is a family member.

3. The only way that you can have your DH to be the primary driver is to use his credit card for rental security authorization. Upon return, you may choose to pay for the rental using a different credit card.

I have a friend who had a problem with National a couple of years ago. Her husbands CC# on the Emerald Club profile had expired. They wanted to see the new card at the booth (they used EA). He did not have it with him. His wife got her card out, they would not accept it, they said it had to be in his name since the ressie was in his name. They ended up having to park the car and go into the counter to straighten it out. They did finally accept her card. With National, spouses are free with Emerald Club.

When I recently booked my res w/Dollar, I booked it under his name, with my credit card number. This did not seem to be a problem for them. I mentioned that it was my card but he would drive -- they said that was fine and didn't say anything about extra charges for additional driver. I would just call them and ask. That's what I did.
