Hi Gang

I have a rate of $224 for club level at the Dolphin for June. I also have 7000 SPG points and I'm a gold member. Is there any way I can use my points to lower this rate even more. Say $20-50 off per night?? Yes, I know I'm dreaming but just thought I'd ask.

Thanks
Andy

Well...IF Starwood is having a "Cash and Points" promotion, you could pay ~ $60 per night plus 4000 points, that's the only way I know of that points can lower your rate. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/starpoints/cash_points_proplist.html?region=NAD And THEN...you'd have to use 1000 points more per night for Club level.

If you get the Starwood American Express card, you'll get 1 certificate per year to get 50% off rack rate for your stay, but that's not likely to be much less than you're paying now. However, you should get some bonus points just for getting the card and using it. http://www66.americanexpress.com/ca...efined&mgmID=undefined&request_type=undefined

You can use 1000 pts. and get 50% off rack rate. I am not sure if that would be cheaper or not. Depends on what rack rate is.

I just spent 10,000 pts. for one night at the Swan. I keep thinking that is soooo many points.

I had heard somewhere that S/D didn't participate in cash and points anymore. Is that true? When I made reservations, I asked the CM about using SPG points. She said I could use them for "instant rewards" and to inquire what instant rewards are available when we check in. Does anyone know how this works?

It is true that the S/D no longer participate in cash and points. You can use points for instant rewards for room service, spa treatments, etc. Also when you book 4 nights at the S/D using points, you get the 5th night free.

Is the 4 nights/5th night free a temporary promotion, or something that is always in effect? I'm thinking of possibly using points to stay there next spring, and that would be nice to know.

To the OP - do you have an AmEx with Membership Rewards? If you do, you can transfer points to your SPG account for a better ratio than normal through the end of March. Usually it's a 3:1 ratio, but right now it's 2:1. Smallest number of points you can transfer is a 1,000, I believe.

The 4 nights/5th night free is a permanant promotion with Starwood.

I am going to chime in here. What was the difference between a regular room and a Club Level? Are you sure that the "free breakfast" and evening offerings were worth the difference?

Another option is to book a regular room at a cheaper rate (if available) and then use your points to upgrade to club level. I believe you do this 5 days prior to arrival. But then, it's per availability. So don't do this if you ABSOLUTELY have to have club level.
