We got a new cocker spaniel puppy in August. She is doing great in her crate at night. No accidents. However, during the day is another story. She goes into the laundry room with a gate and pee pads when we leave during the day and only pees on the pads.(yeah) The problem is when we are home she is allowed in the kitchen, laundry room and sun porch. She is taken outside about every 30 to 45 minutes to go to the bathroom and she does. However, she is still constantly and randomly urinating or pooping on the floor. Does anyone have any advice on how to address this? Thank

During the day she needs to be crated. NO MORE PEE PADS!! You are confusing her, basically you are telling her it is OK to pee in the house.

Your poor puppy is confused. Use your crate when you go to work. Use your crate when you are home. Use your crate for consistency. The puppy pads are confusing for animals. If you are not actively interacting with the dog she should be in a crate. Really crates are the dogs own room-their den so to say. Use a doggy service to come in and take her for a walk during the day. Or a neighborhood kid. Take her outside every 30 minutes or so when you are home. Use a phrase to cue her-I use "hurry up". Reward her each time she goes potty outside. Patience and consistency are the key. Less freedom will lead to more success. If you contunue on the path you are on you will never have success with potty training. The puppy will never understand why it is OK to sometimes go in the house (on pads or not) and sometimes not OK. Good luck.

By this time you really shouldn't still be using potty pads. My theory is that they might be good for limited use early in potty training, but this many months since you got her I'd say they are just confusing her. You're teaching her to blur the line between potty outside/don't potty inside. And, well, honestly, I don't know where you get potty pads absorbent enough for a cocker spaniel!

My advice is to find a way to phase out the potty pads and come home for lunch so she can potty outside.

Also, it sounds like your dog is pooping a lot! Do you "free feed"? If she is randomly eating throughout the day whenever she pleases, she won't have regular bowel movements. Try feeding on a fixed schedule, and that should help.

As for peeing, on of my dogs actually has a problem with her muscles which cause her to leak when she is relaxed (i.e. sleeping). Do you see when she is peeing? Is it deliberate? Or does it suddenly appear?

Ditto about eliminating the puppy pads. I did the same thing. I brought a new puppy home Christmas week (what was I thinking?) She is now 12 weeks old.

I knew I couldn't be consistant that week so I bought a package of puppy pads. I crated our puppy when we left the house but tried to give her as much exercise as I could by allowing her freedom in the kitchen and my bathroom; places where there was linoleum. I was still taking her to the backyard every time I turned around but she was also using the puppy pads and sometime not! Then came the day she decided she wanted to play with the puppy pad! I came in and it was in shreds! That's when I decided no more puppy pads. I'm being much more frequent with taking her out and we still have accidents but I agree with what previous posters said about confusing her.
