Could any fellow DIS'ers from NYC/NJ suggest a decent hotel around Midtown? My sister and I are going to go for a shopping trip (I will be the one doing the "window-shopping") to Manhattan after Thanksgiving, and are trying to find a clean, decent hotel to stay at that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and is still somewhat safe. We were thinking of something from 40th to 50-ish streets. Is that doable? Any other suggestions/ideas of what we absolutely have to hit while we are there? Thanks so much!!!!!

Midtown hotels are usually going to be expensive.

Have you thought about staying away from Midtown?

The less touristy areas are really nice. AND you can always ride a subway into Midtown.

The Upper West Side is a great area. We stayed at Hotel Beacon and the Lucerine (sp?). They were both pretty nice.

We have plans, in early November, to stay in the West Village at the Washington Square hotel. We've never been there before, but I've heard really good things about it.

I've also heard that you can get good deals on priceline.com. I've never tried it though.

The Hotel Edison on W. 47th between Broadway and Eighth always has reasonable rates. It is clean, safe, and has a great location but it isn't a luxury hotel by any means. It can be difficult to get a room because they have many tour groups. Try calling instead of the internet. 800-637-7070

When you say after Thanksgiving, do you mean Black Friday? or just any other random day?

I used to suggest the Paramount Hotel, which was around $100 a night. Now rooms start at $289. Ouch!

In May, we spent the night at a W Hotel on the east side with a shopping package. I got a Banana Republic gift card and some other gift cards. The room was around $300.

Midtown is indeed very, very expensive. Plus, once you hit holiday season, the prices absolutely skyrocket to unbelievable heights. I second the suggestion that you consider staying in lower Manhattan. Perhaps even Hoboken, NJ or in an outer bourough

We are planning on going the Tues. after black Friday to hopefully avoid traveling on that weekend and the ensuing shopping chaos. All the "deals" I have seen so far only go through that Saturday (Nov.25), then the prices jump again, just as RickinNYC said.:sad1:

Is it a major pain to take shopping bags on the subway? How difficult is it really to use the subway?
Semi OT: The last time we took a shopping trip to NYC was exactly 16 yrs ago, and we learned the hard way NEVER to say to a NY cabbie "We are in a hurry and have to get to LaGuardia." I thought we were all going to die.
