Help please, Magic carpet ideas

Hello, I am relatively new to these boards and could use some help with ideas.
I wanted to make an Aladdin style magic carpet for xmas for my daughter.Dare I hope someone has already made something similar? I have posted this request on another craft board, but I was hoping DISers would have some ideas for me.
She thinks that the small rug she is using now isn't pretty enough for a magic carpet. So I am searching for ideas. I had thought of doing something with velvet and satin to give it that rich looking quality, although I am not sure if I am getting in over my head. I am only a little better than a beginner at sewing, so something that isn't too complicated would be best. Any input is appreciated.

buy a king sized or extra large cheap pillow (so it lays flat and not puffy) and cover it with the satin and rich fabrics. glue or sew tassles on the ends.

Do you have a fabric store that sells upholstery fabric?? Some of that can be really ornate on its own, but embellishing it will help... Maybe use that as a top and some simple (thinner fabric) coordinating as a bottom. Deep purple and gold would be GREAT colors! Straight stitches around the sides... and add tassles! SIMPLE!
