Help please...Logan (or PVD) to LAX

I'm out of my comfort zone here as we travel primarily from PVD using SWA.
I need to book airfare from PVD or Logan to LAX for the end of July. I see that SWA does go to LAX from PVD (ideal!) but the airfare are a bit high. Of course, internet special rates are not yet posted. Meanwhile, Spirit and Midwest out of Logan have decent rates (about 315 r/t) but I know nothing about Midwest or Spirit. I prefer to use airlines who have low probability of cancelling/rescheduling flights and who have a decent cancellation policy. OK, I prefer to use SWA, but if not them, any feedback on Spirit or Midwest?

Keep an eye out for PVD-LAX Dings for Southwest.

Do you actually need to fly into LAX? There are a few smaller airports in Southern California that may be cheaper -- Burbank (BUR), Ontario (ONT), John Wayne (SNA). Jet Blue flies nonstops between Logan (BOS) and Long Beach (LGB).

Southwest does have the best cancellation/rescheduling policy around, though.

Hi Improv...nice to talk with you again. Final destination is Santa Barbara so according to their "host", flying into LA would be the best bet. I would love to wait for some dings, but don't think these 20 something year olds have the patience to do so. Looks like Midwest or Spirit. I've not flown either..I've heard decent things about Spirit. I've never heard of Midwest.

LAX may be the most convenient but LGB is about 30 minutes from LAX (22 miles) so you still may want to consider it depending on the fares. We're flying from BOS-LGB in a few weeks on JetBlue and I love the idea that it's a very small airport compared to LAX, especially considering this is our first time going to CA.

Keep in mind with Spirit they're charging extra fees now for luggage, etc so look closely at their website.

Haven't heard many good things about Spirit, but we really love SW. I noticed you are in RI...can you fly out of Hartford? Sometimes SW rates are cheaper out of Hartford. (Found this to be true for our June trip). But...don't know if they fly into LAX from there.

Also...check www.sidestep.com and www.kayak.com to compare all the rates.
