I have always requested a non-handicapped room but I believe we will need a handicapped rom for our Thanksgiving trip. If requested, are we guaranteed a HC room? My mother fell yesterday, shattering her knee cap and fracturing her femur requiring surgery this AM. At this point, I am not sure she will still be able to or even want to go but this trip has been her dream for over a year. Her first words (cry) to me when I spoke to her was about ruining the Disney trip. In the event she can go, I want to make sure I have everything in place that she may need. We will be picking my P's up at their condo in Bradenton and driving to WDW. Our first three nights are at BWV and last two at OKW (unless our waitlist miraculously comes through). Is there anything I should be aware of at these Villas? Any suggestions? She has to be non-weight bearing for 4 weeks so I thought the HC showers would be ideal. We are in a 2BR unit. My understanding is that she will be able to use a walker type device but will need a wheelchair for longer distances. I would really appreciate any help!
Thanks!

you can call member service and request hc - but to get it guaranteed you have to go through

a special department - go visit the Disability board for the real instructions.

you can get a free wheelchair from the resort - either bell services or the front desk - that say would go for an outside carrier and get her a scooter - so she has more control.

here is the disABILITIES board

You should call Member Services, explain the situation, and then be transferred to Special Needs. Special Needs can block an accessible room, if one is available for your stay.

The resorts do have a limited number of free loaner manual wheelchairs available, but you can not reserve on in advance, they are first come, first served. They will require a deposit. A warning, they aren't always in the best of shape. Have a phone number handy for an ofiste rental company, they can deliver by the next day, maybe the same day of called early enough.

If you don't already have an Handicap Hangtag for your car, see if you can get an authorization for one from her dr. You may find it easier to drive to most of the parks. However, I recommend you take the busses to MK, the HA parkig there has a steep walkway under the roadway near the kennel, then you still need to board the boat or monorail to the park. The busses, of couse, drop you right in front. :)

As Pat suggested, see our disABILITIES! Board for more helpful information :)

I hope she recovers quickly, and has a great time at WDW. Non-weight bearing for 4 weeks is going to be a little tough on her :(

spicycat and Chuck S-
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I totally forgot about the Disabilities board which should be a wealth of information. I will call MS tomorrow.
Also, thank you for the well wishes for my mother, Chuck. We are going to wait until 5 days before the trip to see if she is up to it. If not, we will cancel everything and spend a nice quiet Thanksgiving at their condo.

If you cannot get a HA room you may want to ask for a room close to the elevator at BWV; at OKW ask for a room on first floor or in a bldg. with an elevator. Good luck to your mom and to all of you for a Happy Thanksgiving, wherever it may be.

Make sure that you tell MS that your requests are due to medical reasons. That info will be noted on your reservation for the room assigners to see.

However, if the rooms are already booked, you can not get them, no matter what the medical reason. We tried to get the handicapp rooms for my mom, only to be told they are already filled, and she will just be getting a regular room. You can request if one comes available, but that's it.

Disneyhappy, I'm sorry to hear of your mother's fall. I hope surgery and her rehab go well.

When you call MS to request an accessible room, be sure to specify rollin shower if that's what your mother thinks will work best. MS will actually talk to Special Requests for you....they'll put you on hold while that happens. If a villa with a rollin shower is available, it will be blocked for you. Just having a request noted will not do it....be sure MS talks to that department while you're on hold.

If a rollin shower villa is not available, perhaps a shower bench will work for your mother. The resorts will provide that. Ask for it to be noted and then when you arrive, call housekeeping for it. If your mother will be working with a physical therapist at all, the PT might have some advice about that. If it would work for her, I can see some advantages to a shower bench versus a rollin shower.

The disAbilities forum is a awesome place for advice about manual chairs, scooters or ECVs, etc..

Good luck to your mom.

I agree with the shower bench. My mom has knee problems and has had one knee replaced. She uses a shower bench at home in her own bathroom. My guess is your mom would appreciate the shower bench much more.

This is a picture of a roll in shower (the picture shows a roll in shower in the second bedroom at OKW 2 bedroom- or OKW studio).

The advantage would be that there is nothing to step over to take a shower. The disadvantage is that the floor can get wet and somewhat slippery. I agree with BCV23 that a regular shower with a shower chair may work better for her - especially if she is in a studio, which would have a tub in a non-handicapped room.

ALSO - on our recent trip (got back 1 week ago), we had an accessible one bedroom villa confirmed. The CM who made the original reservation did confirm a roll in shower room for us with the Special Needs Department. I also called Special Needs to verify and they did confirm it. Our confirmation sheet also said "Accessible room confirmed."
When we arrived at OKW, before leaving HH, my DH asked to verify that the room we were assigned had a roll in shower. The CM said it did not and that "all the first floor rooms are accessible." DH asked them to check since we did have a room with a roll in shower confirmed. The CM said there was no note on the reservation, but went 'backstage' to check another computer. There, he found that a room with a roll in shower had been blocked for us. He explained that the Special Needs computer and the MS computer can't 'talk' to each other, so the front computer did not know we had a room assigned in the 'back' computer.

Wow! You are all such a wealth of information. Thank you so much for sharing with me. I have found out that while she must be non weight bearing for a month, she will be able to walk using a walker during that month but will need a wheelchair/scooter for longer walking. I like the idea of a roll-in shower if available as I think she may have trouble lifting her leg into a tub. She not only fracture her femur just above the knee, she shattered her knee cap. So besides the plate in her leg, they wired her kneecap back together so I imagine it will be difficult to lift her leg over a tub. If we can go ahead with the trip and we don't get a roll in shower and she can't get into the tub (with a bench), I'm sure I can still help her bathe. Keeping our fingers crossed! Thank you again!

All the Disney resorts have some wheel chairs for check out for a deposit, with or without locks. They are first come.

For getting into the tub, she will probably be working with the OT and PT at the Rehab facility (after all, most people don't have a roll in shower at home and need to know how to manage with what they do have). Using a bath chair, she could stand with a walker or sit in a wheelchair next to the tub, then transfer to the bath chair with her legs still outside the tub. The last step is swinging the legs into the tub. That is probably what they will be working with her on.

Since a wheelchair or ECV is vital for her, you don't want to take a chance on whether one is available for loan at the resort. You should check into renting one from one of the off-site places (there are some listed in the disABILITIES FAQs thread in post #2 - link to that thread is in my signature). As an alternative, you might want to look into renting from a local place and bring it with you. If you are traveling by air, mobility equipment (like a wheelchair or ECV) travels with you at no charge and can't be counted against your baggage allowance. The same goes for her walker.

We are flying down to FL and picking up my parents who are already down there for the month so I will have to rent one down there. It would be nice to already have one for when we fly her back home with us, though. She is scheduled to go into a nursing home/rehab on Monday. It is good to know they will be teaching her how to handle activities of daily living. My father is blind and we have been dealing with his disability for years. While I have always been compassionate for people with mobility disabilities, I am now learning a whole new respect for people who suffer from a mobility disability. So many obstacles to overcome as everything is structured for people who can walk. I take for granted hoe simple it is for me to simply get out of bed. At least I know my mother will eventually heal to the point where she will be able to walk again.

That's certainly true but the risk is minimal as they have a lot of wheelchairs and you can get one from any resort, not just the one you're staying at. The risk is minimal. I'd try to find a backup option that I could cancel. I don't frequent the disabilities board but I don't every hearing that one couldn't get a WC, I have heard on limited occasions that they had to get with a different resort.

Keep in mind the one bedroom units (except for Jambo House at AKV) will have the walk in shower in the master bedroom. This is another helpful thing since you don't have to lift your leg to enter. When I broke my leg, I had a regular tub/shower at home at the time, and would need to balance with my walker outside of it in order to get in. The broken Leg would remain outside and I would stand on my good leg in the tub. Not easy..

Sue, have you had that problem in the past? The last two times we have reserved a rollin shower villa at BCV, we ended up being assigned to a inaccessible villa. Both times they did find an accessible villa in the end. I wonder if this is a relatively new problem as it never happened at the "regular" resorts. I hope someone fixes the issue soon.

I think it varies. The 2 bedroom villas at BCV have walkin showers in both the master and studio portion. Club level AKV has the rollin only in the master. And it sounds like OKW has rollins in both studio and master?:confused3

Does anyone know about BWV?

Disneyhappy, one other disadvantage of some rollin showers is that the adjustable showerhead does not always attach well. It can be perched on the top of the pole easily but if you need to lower it, the showerhead can not be fastened tightly in some of the rooms we've had. One maintenance guy told my DH that the part that fits is not made anymore. He found a replacement for ours at one of the other resorts. That may not be as much of an issue for your mother though if she could use it as a handheld shower. Our DD is unable to do that.

Dean, we use to borrow a resort wheelchair for our daughter. I remember one time when she was probably 8 or so. The only chair they had was for a poohsized adult. They did get a child size one for her by the next day.

Yes.
I has happened our last 3 trips (Oct 2007, April 2008 and Oct 2008). I all cases, the reservation was made with the MS CM calling Special Needs to verify that an accessible room was available for the dates we needed. The room was blocked for us by Special Services, our confirmation sheet said "Accessible Villa Guaranteed" (or something very similar) and when I called Special Needs to check, they verified that it was in their computer that way.
When we went to check in, they said there was nothing in our record about any special needs.
For our last trip, DH said we had reserved an accessible room; the CM said it didn't say anything. My DH asked if there was anyplace else to check or whether they could call Special Needs. At that point, the CM got a supervisor who said maybe they should check the 'other computer' backstage and they were able to find the room.
The CM tol my DH that there are 2 different computer systems which can't 'talk' to each other. The DVC computer at the check in desk was not capable of looking into the other system which has accessibilty information. My question in that case was why they could not have a note on the DVC part that tells the CM assigning rooms to look on the other computer.

All the accessible 2 bedroom OKW villas have been lock off units with roll in showers in both the Master Bedroom and the Studio. I don't know if there are dedicated accessible units at OKW or whether those might have a roll in shower in just one part.

We've had the same problem.

Other people have posted similar experiences. When there was not an appropriate wheelchair, some people have posted it took anywhere from hours to days to get a more appropriate one. People have also posted a number of times in the past year that the wheelchair available at the resort was not in good condition; in one case, the 'replacement' from another resort was also a problem (size).
So, if someone would not be able to get from the resort to a park without a wheelchair, I would suggest renting from one of the off-site companies. In a case like that, if the resort wheelchair won't work for the guest, it may mean that they can't go anywhere that day.
If the guest could get to the park without a wheelchair, getting one at the resort is less of a 'gamble'. If they can't get one there, they could wait a day and still get to the park, where one could be rented.
At the very least, I would suggest taking along the name and phone number for one or more of the off-site companies.

While I am not certain, I would suspect that is true. It makes sense because they can satisfy the ADA requirements with less units that way. Rob may know for certain.

I was actually referring to non handicapped accessible one bedrooms. Except for AKV Jambo House, they all will have a stand alone walk in shower stall in the master bedrooms. Sorry I wasn't clear...
