I was thinking we would make it to Charlotte on our way home, but after looking today, Columbia SC seems much more reasonable to me, being only 7 hours. It also puts me at the 26/77 connection. There is a Microtel for a great price...any experience there? Any other other clean, reasonable choices nearby? Thanks!

Depends, what do you consider a great price.

I lived in Columbia for a bit and the highway motels in the area never looked too appealing. You can stay downtown for a very reasonable price. Ever since it opened I put family up at the Hilton but there is also a decent Clarion on Gervais St near the Capital Building as well as a renovated Marriott Residence Inn (I think that's what its called) on Assembly St near the intersection of Blossom St.

I would check the Hotwire and Priceline Maps for the Columbia area to see what zones are close to your driving route. Then check for 3* hotels on Hotwire in those zones and compare to the price you will be paying. I think you are usually pretty safe with a 3* hotel. You can probably get a better deal on Priceline than Hotwire. Check Betterbidding.com for recent wins in the Columbia area and it will give you idea of the bid you would have to make to get a hotel at a particular star level and also the names of the hotels which have recently been won.

If you'll be traveling up I-77 you can go into Rock Hill, there's a nice Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn and a new Comfort Suites right off the highway. I live in Rock Hill and it takes me 7 1/2 hours to get to DW when I drive. We're about an hour north of Columbia.

Thanks everyone. This is a stop over night on our way to PA, so we will be continuing to 77. I'd like to stay near the highway and would like to spend less than $100 for a clean, newer hotel that serves breakfast. Any other information would be appreciated:)

There is a courtyard by Marriot and a Residents Inn by Marriot a little further up 77 at around exit 21. Right off the highway. Would be the Farrow road exit. Both are fairly new. One is next door to a cracker barrel and the other is across the street from it. Look for Gateway corp blvd or legrand rd. Not sure of prices but You would definately be just off the highway.

You may get farther than you think. It takes us 7 hours to do the WDW-Charlotte (South Charlotte) drive. Only one quick stop for gas (incl/ potty and drive-thru) though.

Oooh, really? I am a speedier driver, so I will keep that in mind:) ANy suggestions for a place to stay there?

We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Gervais St in January, on our return trip. It was one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in (and I travel a bit for work, so I've seen a lot.) It was about 175/night, which wasn't cheap, but it did have a nice breakfast. For a family of four, that was worth it.

The Liberty Tap Room and Grill is in the same building, and it had excellent food, and a great kids menu. Lots of other restaurants close by.

I HIGHLY recommend it. It was wonderful!

OK, reading further down... :rotfl:

I just spent a week in Charlotte at a conference. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Southpark in Charlotte. Walking distance to a huge mall with a Cheesecake Factory. Which is worth whatever price you gotta pay.

ETA: Our rate was $129, and it was a huge suite with a pull-out sofabed, and 2 double beds, and a full kitchen.

This is so weird - I just came on the boards to ask basically the same question. I just booked us in the Microtel in Rock Hill, SC - looks like it's about half way between Pittsburgh and Orlando. I read some reviews on TripAdvisor, Priceline and Yahoo! and they were all favorable. However, it gets a 2* rating (not 3) from AAA. Not sure what that means....

We just want clean and comfortable - we'll probably spend less than 12 hours there. Rate we got was $67.88 (including tax). Please let me know if anyone knows anything bad about this motel!!!

Stopping after you get through Columbia and onto the 77 is a good choice. There are a few places around exits 20-30, then a big long stretch pretty much until you get to Rock Hill. Haven't stayed any place there, so can't help you on that, but I can tell you where NOT to speed!! Honestly, I believe that SC is balancing their state budget on speeding tickets these days.

Good to know, thanks:)

Stay in Columbia. It is a beautiful place! The only problem is that you might want to stay longer... :) I first stay in Columbia during a road trip like yours and loved it. So the next year we were back to explore the area... It was beautiful. We always be back to South Carolina because Columbia. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Columbia Downtown Historic District (http://www.hamptoninncolumbia.com/) because of the Historic District part. the hotel was great, the breakfast was nice and the area was perfect.
