We'd like to spend 9 days total. We would fly into SF and fly out of Vegas (or reverse that).

I realize it would be a lot of driving time, but we enjoy driving and exploring.

We are not gamblers, so 2 nights in Vegas would be enough.

Is this trip doable? Although we'd love to go to Lake Tahoe, I'm concerned that it may be a bit out of the way.

I'm also a bit concerned about driving across Death Valley in July.

Any advice, suggestions?

Driving across Death Valley in the summer isn't an issue with a car in good condition and A/C. Just don't get out of the car for too long without heading for a place with A/C. Stick to the main roads and you'll be fine.

You do realize that Vegas in the summer is a 100 degrees?

We've driven from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite several times. It's about a 3-hour drive (if I remember correctly), and you enter Yosemite via the Tioga Pass - spectacular drive.

I would fly into San Francisco, stay 2 nights, explore.....drive to S Lake Tahoe (about a 4 hour drive). You can stop in Old Sacramento to break up the drive and explore some or get lunch. If you go to Lake Tahoe, take the boat cruise to Emerald Bay. The water is the deepest blue I've ever seen.

Drive down toward Yosemite and then to Vegas. We drove through Death Valley and there are towns all down the highway.

Is that the most efficient way to do this trip? It is what I had in mind and sounds like a great idea.

I think I would do the same thing. We have the railroad museum in old Sac. And lots of little places to eat. If you like regular shopping, you can walk the tunnel which is linked to the K st mall. The mall has a theater and a Johnnie Rocket's.
