Help!!! Our brand new puppy has parvo!

Better check with your insurance company and/or lease (if you rent) many have pit bull clauses.

We own our home, but I'll check our insurance policy. I'll also talk to the vet to see if they can offer more insight. The one who mentioned pit only saw him for a short time but I do see the pit in him now that I've looked at pics of them. I googled pitadors and labrabulls. Gotta love designer dogs! ;)

my second thought was that dog is not a boxer...
first was POOR BABY!

I'm sorry to say if this is not a reputable breeder concerned about their reputation (which I guarantee they are not considering they sold you a puppy way too young) you are out of luck.
However, for the sake of the other babies, please please contact your ASPCA and alert then about your dog's situation.
They may be able to do a welfare check on the others.

Good luck and God bless you for seeing him through this!

I agree with all of the above, and I think Parvo is very easily spread ( it might be Distemper ) so be careful. When he's all better, I'd get one of those DNA test from Petsmart, because I'm thinking full or mixed pit.

One of our Danes had parvo as a puppy. I didnt have her then, but actually remember her being treated in my vets office. Now she is a healthy almost 3 yr old.
I would ask your vet about a payment plan. I hope they would be able to work with you on this. Good Luck!

ETA: the incubation period for parvo is longer than 24 hours. So even if the dog had come into contact while you had it, no symptoms would have shown up that quick. The puppies probably all have parvo but maybe not
Mom and grandma if they were vaccinated. However, they could have brought the infection to the pups by stepping in contaminated dog feces.

It looks like a lab/boxer mix to me and I have raised both as purebreds. Sorry to hear about the vet bills. My DN went thru this with a purebred beagle and Parvo. I also can see not wanting to let him go.
Not to be the bearer of bad news but if it is the mix you say it is, he will probably go deaf in the one ear and lose his sight in the other eye but he still has one of each.
We go thru amazing things for our pets.
Now on to the good news. My vet told me a story. As a boxer breeder, any that had too much white had to be put to sleep at first shot time, tails, dewclaws, ect.. He did put one to sleep at the breeders request and a while later his nephew came into the office. He heard some little sounds and came out with this tiny boxer, all white. His uncle could not say no but just to say he would try to save the little pup. That little pup lived for 18 years. he did lose his hearing but he more than made up for it in personality. He was the most devoted dog any owner would want. My vet for over 40 years refuses now to put any pups to sleep just because they don't meet the breeders standards. He fixes them so they can't breed and they make wonderful pets!
I hope you get the money to cover the bill. You won't regret it.:goodvibes

This is exactly what I was thinking. Sadly, those puppies are all probably in the heat of the virus by now with little hope of recovery, or have been put to sleep. Romeo's symptoms came on fast and strong- he went from a little diarrhea around noon to vomiting and losing strength in his legs in less than hour. By the time he was seen by the vet (about 2:30pm) he was barely able to stand up. On the way to the hospital from the vet (around 6:00pm) he had a seizure. It took me three days to get a hold of that lady to let her know about the parvo, so I don't hold much hope for those little cuties. Even if she sold them all I'm not sure many people would opt to treat them over returning them.

Hmmm, now I'm gonna have to get that DNA test. What's another $50 or so after $2k right? ;) I think I'll wait a while on that one though! How odd to lose one eye's sight and the opposite ear's hearing- is that a genetic thing with boxers? It's terrible the things people do to dogs when they aren't exactly what they wanted...

I would get pet health insurance we use petplan it only cost about $190 to $310 depending on your plan

After this and a $1200 bill for a cat several years ago, I am most definitely getting pet insurance! I was going to start looking into it last Tuesday but that got nipped in the bud...

My aunts dog had parvo right after they got him (they found him as a stray). From what she has told me, the ground that they have gone the bathroom on is forever contaminated. So you have to be sure that any dog that comes into your yard has been vaccinated.

It isn't forever contaminated, but it does take 5-7 months (not including times when the ground is frozen) for the virus to die outside, and about 1 month for it to die off indoors. We have already disinfected our yard and home, we were lucky that he only went on one spot in the grass and never even went in the backyard at all. We also informed all of our neighbors with dogs as soon as we found out about it.

It is not forever , but can be for up to a year if left untreated. To treat you spray a mixture of chlorox and water. I had to spray my yard after some fosters had it.

We own our home, but I'll check our insurance policy.
Maybe your vet will let you pay off on time. Lots will do this.
And, we own our home too, but can't have Pits, Dobermans, German Shepard, and Rotties, I think, according to our ins. policy. And they did come by unannounced to check.

It is a genetic thing with animals that should be of a certain coloring. Pisses me off too. They write them off as not up to quality. Kind of "Off with their heads" (that was a joke, Alice in Wonderland) Same with Dalmations, and many other breeds. I do not miss the show world of animals.

keep in mind that even though your puppy only "went" on one spot on the grass and was never in the backyard, since you were in/at a home where parvo existed-you may have gotten exposure on your shoes so any place (your home/cars) you subsequentaly wore those shoes in should be considered for a clean up. better safe than sorry.

this issue came to our attention a few years ago when we had a buisness out to our home to do some exterior work on the house. we have had workmen put on disposable shoe covers when working IN the house but never outside, so i just had to ask why they were doing it. they explained that due to a parvo issue in the region there was a push for exterior workers to use disposable shoe covers to prevent transmission from yard to yard, neighborhood to neighborhood.

We lost our 1st puppy to parvo, had him 2 days & he went down rapidly. Had an argument with the breeder who only backed down when the vet stepped in.

We wanted another dog but had to wait out the incubation period & our next dog had to be fully vaccinated before the breeder released her to us. We also were not allowed near the puppy when we went to view her in case we had the virus on us still.

We had to disinfect our whole garden & shampoo the carpets.

I hope your pup gets better soon:hug:

My 12 yr old Boxer had parvo. I do not remember decontaminating anything! It was at the end of my pregnancy and my husband was taking her to the vet back then. She also had mange. We paid $300 from a breeder and I never thought to get money from her. Apparently we were lucky in the end since everything worked out for us. She's a great dog!

Do you have Care Credit in your area? I put my vet bills on it. It is 0% interest for a certain amount of time that is determined by the total amount submitted. Sometimes it is 3 months sometimes a year. It has really helped us with the 3 dogs we own.

I have a contract from my breeder that states:
Your new puppy comes with a 21 day money back guarentee, for whatever reason.

The pup also came with a 2 year health guarantee and the guarantee includes hereditary issues.

Did you get any kind of contract with the puppy?

if you take it back that puppy is dead. they probaly are already attached to the puppy and dont want to see it put down
