Help or advice with RCI trade?

This is for a friend who bought into a Las Vegas TS years ago. Apparently they never use it, and love Disney. They asked (or I offered, I forget) to help them figure out how to trade into any DVC resort. They would be happy with a 1bd at SSR, and are willing to wait a year (they said they would plan around it if they get it).

They are going to give me their login info so I can start planning for them. They are super busy with three kids and both parents are very busy professionals with little time.

Any help is most appreciated. They are giving me their login to rci soon...

First question- do they have to pay to start a search? Or does that come later?

Thx!!!

Are you sure they have enough trade power for DVC? They might need to consider Bonnet Creek or a Hilton timeshare as an alternative.

I'm more familiar with II but I'm pretty sure you have to pay up front to put in a trade request /search.

It depends on what they have. If you can give me (here or privately) the resort, villa size and week or season as well as whether it's a weeks or RCI points resort and if it's in a points system like Wyndham or Bluegreen, I'm sure I can offer significant help. They do need to start an ongoing search if they have the ability (not everyone does but most do) and will need to pay the fee which is refundable if a match is not found or if they cancel before a match is found. If it matches, they likely have 24 hours to cancel for free as well with a couple of exceptions. Anyone in this situation that wants to contact me privately is welcome to do so through DIS, I can provide additional contact info then. I don't want to publish private info generically here. Due to the more specific nature and likely back and forth on this issue, privately is best. In addition, at least a summary here would give others a chance to chime in.

Dean is a fantastic resource for these sorts of questions; take him up on the offer.

If you want a more DIY approach, I encourage you to join TUG: www.tug2.net and www.tugbbs.com

The good news: a 1BR SSR at any time of year should be doable if they are willing to commit enough of their own timeshare resources to the task.

Thank you! As soon as they provide their login info and their target dates, I'll reach out. They said they have rarely if ever used their timeshare and have accumulated year and years worth of "points" and do not know what to do with it all. Much much appreciation! Happy New Year's!

It could be RCI points, Bluegreen, Marriott, Wyndham or other. Still, it's unlikely they have accumulated a lot of points, normally they work much like DVC and are only good an extra year or so and even then, sometimes one has to do something to keep them active.

I have very very little experience, but I was recently helping my FIL with his banked RCI points and saw rooms at SSR and OKW pop up regularly for a week. In most cases it was within a month, but I'm sure with time, I would have seen better dates. Definitely got me excited for the future - he didn't even realize he could book into DVC at all.
