I will be traveling to WDW in Feb 2011 for 4 days prior to a 3 day Disney cruise. I'll also be traveling again in 2012. I'm wondering if it would be better ( read less expensive ) to purchase a 7 day MYW park hopper thru my union or UT and then upgrade to the no expiration option when I go to disney in feb?

Actually I'm not 100% sure it's possible to do an upgrade to no expiration but I've done an upgrade in the past from a 7 day myw to an AP and it was pretty reasonable as I remember, around $60. Since my travel dates are outside the 12 month AP time and I don't currently have an AP i can renew for 15 months my other option is to purchase a 4 day hopper now and again in 2012???? Also any idea how to figure what it would cost to do it?

Confused new DVCer in Upstate NY

According to gate prices, a 7 day base ticket is $234 and a non-exp is $349, so an upgrade would be $115 (+ tax) for adults.

Thanks Chuck S. One other question, would the amount be the same regardless of whether I've used one or 3 days of the original ticket? With my example with one day use I'd be upgrading 6 days with 3days use only 4 days. Does that make any difference to the cost?

The upgrade would need to be for the entire length of the original ticket, it does not matter if some days were already used.

Thanks again! looks to me like I'm better off purchasing the no expiration thru UT directly. A 7 day hopper w. No Exp for 4 adults would be $1584 vs buying a 7 day hopper for 4 adults for $1140 then upgrading to No exp + 490 ( 115 X 4 X 1.065 tax) for a total of $1630.

Just remember if you buy the tickets through UT or some other discounter and use them once before upgrading they will give you the full gate price towards the upgrade.

Thanks for the info. Best deal then would be to get the tickets with the largest discount from gate price and my savings would be the difference between the UT tickets and gate price since to upgrade I'd be paying the difference between gate price of my tickets and the No exp. option for them.

And, just in case you did not realize this, you must upgrade a non-expiring ticket within 14 days of first use.

So, if you buy MWY hoppers, and use them in Feb 2011, you must upgrade them at that time. You can not wait to upgrade them to the no expiration in 2012.
