Hi everyone!
I am planning a trip to NY City with my daughter so we can go to The American Girl Place and was wondering if anyone could suggest a hotel that will not cost a arm and a leg. Any help will be appreciated. THANKS!

Okay, my alltime favorite hotel is the Michaelangelo. It's on 51st between 6th and 7th--a short, short walk to Times Square. The hotel is Italian-owned and very classically designed. We've stayed budget and posh, and the Michaelangelo is my favorite for providing a fairly reasonable price with all the "foo-foo" of the highest priced hotels. We were there in July and paid $195.00 per night--just ain't bad for NYC!

If you are looking for really budget and, like me, won't compromise safety and quality, I can also recommend the Super 8 Times Square--great location in an old hotel building. The lobby is beautiful--the rooms just typical Super 8 stuff. You will probably save over Michaelangelo, but if it's not much and you can afford/justify the difference--go with Michaelangelo. You won't be sorry! They have a web site @ michaelangelohotel.com.

Good luck and much fun in NYC!

ps....gotta check out World of Disney on 5th and 55th.

I have stayed at the Super 8 Times Square and it was VERY affordable, clean and great location. I pd $80 per night AAA rate but that was two years ago.

Thanks, I am looking to keep as close to $200 as possible. I know that's hard for NYC but we will not be spending time at the hotel except to sleep and shower.

I just got back last week from the Crown Plaza Times Square -- there on business and paid $195/night. It was on Broadway in between 48th and 49th. I had a corner king room by luck with a view of the Hudson and the building that housed "Chicago". It was really nice and we could walk everywhere. It was right next to the Hershey store and is in the HEART of Times Square.

In December, I stayed at On the Ave Hotel. It was a small boutique hotel -- I had a lovely view of a brick wall. It was between Broadway and 77th.

Have you thought about going to the American Girl Place in Chicago? I've been to that one. It was a complex and I've never seen so many dolls!!

I've stayed at the Crown Plaza and it is a great hotel and a great location. Have you tried Priceline yet?

Hotwire has some 4 stars in Midtown Center for about $170. Some good deals are often found for Le Parker Meridien (clean, but quite modern inside) and Essex House (classic Central Park hotel - LOVE this one). There are great Times Square hotels now too. Check out Frommers site for lodging reviews and recommendations for staying with kids.

Good luck! Have fun at American Girl. We hope to get there this fall - it is after all, a ferry ride away :)

We have stayed at the Excelsior on W86th St. It's across the street from the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park with the subway right on the coener. Very nice hotel, room and bathroom for less than $200/night. Remember in NYC to skip any hotel breakfasts served (cost WAY too much) and find out where the corner grocery is. You can pick up yogurts/muffins/juice and eat in for cheap. Have fun deciding.

Hi, I have stayed at the Park Central hotel a few times and there prices are usually pretty reasonable. They also usually give a AAA discount. It is in walking distance of times square. Have A gReat time!

do check priceline --- I can't recall the name of the hotel, but there is one near Times Square that is reasonably priced (under 200) AND offers an afternoon "tea" - I hear it's enough to make it a light lunch! sorry...can't remember the name....but do think it is a chain hotel.

i've stayed at THe Muse on 46th -- one block from TS. It was $250 (w/o tax) for the night. The BED was the best I've ever slept in!!!

I always use priceline for NYC hotels. I've never paid more than $130 for a 4 star in Manhattan. I've always been pretty flexible with where I bid. I somehow always ended up in Times Squre (once at the Hilton, another at the Hyatt).

I know Times Square has changed a lot in the last few years but I would still avoid staying there if it was up to me. There might be some nice hotels there, but there are still plenty of shady characters around. And there are nicer areas where you won't find so much of that like upper Manhattan. And yes, I grew up in NYC. Just my 2 cents. Good luck deciding!

We have recently brought our kids to Times Square both at night and during the day. The kids LOVE all the lights and sounds (not to mention the huge Toys R Us). It is usually just packed with tourists. I didn't really notice too much shadyness - they have really improved the area. I also prefer midtown, central park area, but it is not as convenient (still convenient, but not quite AS convenient as TS) for kid friendly food, etc. The hotels cost more near Central Park as well.

I would base my choice on price and personal preference. Just my opinion!

We were just in NYC 2 weeks ago. We stayed at the Times Square Super 8. We paid $189/night. It was clean and the location is great. There is a free breakfast every morning (bagels/toast/oatmeal/juice). We actually had 4 women in our room and we were not crowded. We had a great experience and would stay at this hotel again. I didn't feel scared at any point in NYC, including the night we were out until 3:30 am. The New Yorker's were much nicer than most people in Minnesota. Have a great trip! I can't wait to go back. We're going to make it an annual event. :flower:

Well since you live in SI, I consider your opinion very worth while :teeth: Like I said, it's been a while since I've been there. I guess staying in TS with my kids is just not my cup of tea (might be why I live in Maine now! :rotfl2: ). I usually try to avoid NYC unless visiting family :grouphug:

Thanks for all the replies. I have seen some great deals but just not for October. We plan on going Oct.8-12. It seems like all the rates go up in September. Everything I seem to find is $300 and up. We will not be spending time at the hotel and I just don't want to spend that much. I guess I'll just keep looking.
Thanks for the help.

I think the Best Western Seaport is the best-kept secret for lodging in NYC. Some rooms have views of the Brooklyn Bridge--lit up at night it's beautiful!

:rotfl2: You were right - that is how it was a few years ago, but they have been trying to revitalize the TS area (with GMA filming there, the big toy store, etc.).

It's funny, but I WISH I was living in Maine!!! You're very lucky!

Thanks, I do feel lucky to live here, but if it was up to DH we'd be moving to Orlando! Not that i don't love visiting Disney but.... :goodvibes . Anyway I still love NY too-just not to live in anymore. But there is no other city like it in the world and it is an awesome place.
