Please tell me someone here can help me out. After saving for a very long time we have purchased a dual fuel Kenmore Elite Stainless Steel stove. We have had it installed in the house for about 3 weeks. This morning I noticed what looked like rust droplets all along the edge and some running down the front. I have used stainless steel cleaner and some of it is coming off but there are still alot of the marks there. It is definately rust. I can smell that metallic smell of it on my cloth I used to clean it HELP!!! I am beside myself. What on earth would make it rust so easily and quickly? What can I do to fix it? How can I prevent it from continuing to happen?! Please tell me one of you has an answer!!!!!!!!!!!

What have you been using to clean the stove? I used a sponge once on my dishwasher and had the same thing happen. I can only guess that there is something on the sponge (it was new) that caused it.

You might try something like barkeepers friend. It works wonders on SS pots and pans. I can't remember how I got it off my dishwasher.

As for the future, make sure that it is dry after you clean it. I only use Pledge and a white rag on my stainless and haven't had a problem since. I will use lysol kitchen cleaner to clean the gunk off the stove and then I use Pledge to shine it up.

CALL THE DEALER!! I have had unbelievable luck lately reporting problems with new items. One was an large deck umbrella that I just called for suggestions on rewinding - they sent a complete new one. The other was cushions for deck chairs that seemed to be developing light mold spots - they sent new cushions. Both responses took me completely by surprise, but they solved the problem. Try the dealer first - maybe there is a problem with the unit. It shouldn't be doing that in such a short time. :confused3

Are you 100% sure that it's stainless? Some dealers try to push chrome as ss.

Beat me to it, BKF is powdered miracle in a can. It works well on just about anything.

This happened to me on the joints of some brand new stainless steel pans when washed (where the handle met the pan). My husband said it was a poor weld and we returned the bad pans and they replaced them - never happened again.

Make them replace it!

Stainless steel should not rust, something else that is not stainless is dripping on it, or there is aluminum on the stove somewhere.

Barkeepers friend is a cheap, non-abrasive cleanser and will take the rust right out, but finding the source of the drips is the big priority.

Also, do not use the metal, scrubby sponges to clean, they are usually aluminum and will scratch your stainless. The residue from the aluminum sponge will get into the scratches and then it will be very difficult to clean out.

I have been doing soe research online and apparently this is not an unusual problem. It has to do w/ how the SS is brushed and he scratches and particulate that get in it. Unfortuantely it is also saying that alot of companies--even big ones like sears, jenn air etc won't do anything about it. My other concern in asking them to replace the stove is that it is a gas stove so we had to pay to have it all connected etc to a gas line. I am sure I would have o pay for all of that again!!! Keep the suggestions coming I will go lok for the Barkeepers friend today

That's awful. This is a huge purchase and you saved for a long time for it, you should have a range that doesn't do this, so if Sears will not return it and reimburse you for the hookup, I'd file an online complaint with the BBB asking that they pick it up, return your money, plus remiburse you for setup. Then I would find another brand that doesn't have this same problem. I'm sure you purchased SS to minimize cleaning maintenance.

We bought an expensive Maytag side-by-side refrigerator a few years ago and it caught on fire about 4 months after owning it. It was a small electrical fire and they determined that the wiring had became loose when it was shipped or delivered and every time the compressor started, it would cause a spark that slowly turned into a fire after time. Maytag came out to fix it and then charged us around $300 to fix it (service calls -labor and parts were covered) (plus took nearly 2 weeks to do it because of ordering a new compressor). I called their corporate office and complained that my family could have died, and after getting through 2 levels of management, they sent a check to cover the repair. A warning about kitchen electrical fires - we had 2 types of smoke/heat detectors in the kitchen and neither went off, but the house filled with a haze so bad that you could barely see, by the time the smoke detector would've gone off, it would've been a big fire. Thankfully, I woke up from the smell, but none of my 4 children or husband did.

Same thing happened to my Maytag Side x Side Fridge about 8 years ago but they replaced it with a brand new one no problem. I chose an Top mount the second time. All in all I would never buy a Maytag again.

OMG! We had a piece of garbage Maytag also. Ours didn't catch fire it was the flooding machine. It leaked all the time.(And it was the top of the line Maytag so not cheap) I was so mad because I had wanted a different one but was swayed by the bells a whistles of the Maytag. I couldn't wait to get rid of it and now I am really glad I did. So sorry about the FIRE!?!
On the rust- Stainless doesn't rust. Something is exposed. Or you had a coated stove and stratched though? Call the company. It should not be doing that!

This exact same thing happened to my Maytag dishwasher that we only had about 2 years. Caused a fire underneath the unit. I was giving my girls a bath and could smell it downstairs. Luckily I caught it before it turned into anything major. I called and they sent a check to cover the cost of a new dishwasher (NOT a Maytag). Didn't even want it repaired, got the thing hauled out of the house immediately!

How strange that we've all had the same/bad problems! I am still irritated with my husband over his insistence that we buy Maytag - JUNK, all of it (and twice the price). My friend got that expensive washer/dryer they made and never got it fixed, she's spent 2 years arguing with Maytag and it was less than 6 mos. old when both failed - it's 600 lbs. of junk sitting in her laundry room.

I wish I had insisted that they take away our refrigerator, but of course my husband buddied up to the repair person and he insisted it would be fine now. I hate side-by-sides and I still want to know why my husband thinks he should choose the appliances when he doesn't even touch them lol (okay done with my rant).

I would be feeling awful about the stainless steel stove - my pans really bothered me and that was less than $100 for two - I agree that it's a manufacturer flaw and should be replaced immediately. Why waste your energy cleaning something that's supposed to be a maintenance free exterior.
