I'm going to be in Vancouver for 3 days in June before leaving on an Alaskan cruise. I booked the Best Western Chateau Granville because there are 4 of us and I wanted the separate bedroom/living area for sleeping. Is this a good hotel/good location? I do not plan on renting a car, but instead plan on using the SkyTrain/taxis for tranportation. Good idea? Also, what are the absolute 'must-sees' in Vancouver? Any and all help/advice is appreciated!

Greetings and welcome to Vancouver... or welcome soon..
I hope I can answer some of your questions.
The BW Chateau Granville is on Gravile street, a few blocks down from the Main downtown shopping mall (The Pacific Center) and the main shopping street (Robson). The hotels you are staying in is fairly central. Right on the bus line and only a few blocks to the skytrain station (at Pacific Center). At night there are quite a few bars in that area, thus some caution and common sense need to be taken, but generally there should not be any problems.

As for renting a car, that really depends on where you plan on going, but with a combination of Bus, Taxis and Skytrain you can get everywhere quite easily.

As for places to see here are my thoughts:
1) Stanley Park. It is a nice casual walk of about 1 mile from the entrance of Stanley Park to the Cruise Terminal.
2) Pacific Center (Shopping downtown)
3) Robson Street (Shopping and people watching)
4) University of British Colubia Museum of Anthropology: Huge museum, everhting and anything regarding the people of the areas and most areas around the world.
5) English Bay. Beach area with gret sunsets and views. About a 30-45 minute walk along the beach area from your Hotel.

I can probably think of more and if you have any specifics please let me know, as I live in Downtown Vancouver and would be more than happy to give whatever info / advice I can...:)

I would only add Granville Island to the list, we quite enjoy it. Not sure about transportation into Granville Island, though.

I'm technically not IN Vancouver, we're actually in the 'burbs, about an hour south, near the border, so can't offer too much more insight into DT Vancouver beyond what's already been mentioned. June is a good month however, not completely packed with tourists yet!

opps.. that's right, Granville Island should not be missed. To get there you can take a bus or a water taxi which leaves from a few locations inthe downtown water front areas. Another area I just remebered was Gastown. Located not too far from the Cruise ship terminal... best of luck and as tinkerbell6 wrote, most fo the tourists haven't showed up yet...:)

Thanks for the info! I will note all of those things and try and work them in. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I plan along, but I wanted to make sure I'm off to the right start. :goodvibes

Good morning!
I used to live in Vancouver and one thing I would recommend if you've got the time is a trip up Grouse Mountain in the tram on a clear night. The view is spectacular and it's easy to get to via public transit.
Try this website it's helpful....www.grousemtn.com
Have a great trip-enjoy Alaska-it's a-m-a-z-i-n-g(although I think the Yukon is better!!)

:D
