My DS8 has been home for 2 days now from school due to fever & sore throat. I took him to the doctor yesterday & he did a throat culture to check for strepp throat but he did say that DS's throat is extremely inflammed. (No results back yet either on the Strepp test.) So he's currently on antibiotics (this is the first time he got it in pill form ~ I couldn't be more thrilled since he hated the liquid version!) but his throat hurts him sooooo much, it even hurts to take a sip of water (or Gatorade which I'd like to give him for his fever.)

Anyone have any ideas what I can give him to soothe his throat a bit? He's so pitiful & you know how this kind of stuff hurts a Mommie's heart.

Please offer me some sort of advice! I know I can always count on my caring Dis'er Mom's!

I'm not a Mommy - but I'll try.

I think you need to do an experiment and see if hot or cold feels better. Different temperatures feel better to different people.

Cold - I vote for ice cream or a malt so it's nice and smooth.

Hot - hot chocolate, chicken broth

Poor thing! Hopefully the antibotics kick in soon!

Would he tolerate the Cloraseptic spray sprayed onto the back of his throat? It's rather numbing but some can't stand it. It might be worth a try. Warm liquids are sometimes more soothing than cold liquids. Try tea with honey & lemon - but not too hot.

(Hang in there Mom!)

This may sound kind of obvious, but did you try a pain reliever? Like Motrin. (Isn't Motrin the one which lasts 6 to 8 hours?)

Thanks for the suggestion on the "hot" stuff, I only kept offering him "cold" thinking that would get the inflammation down. Also, regarding Motrin...yep, been giving that to him every 6 hours due to his fever. I did the Motrin/Tylenol alternating in the middle of the night every 3 hours but today am just trying to do the 3 tspns of Motrin every 6 hours.

Any other tips?

Oh & Tamie ~ you're gonna make a wonderful Mommie someday! ;)

DS had strep a few weeks ago and someone told me about Tylenol sore throat. We didn't need to use it but they said it was great. I believe it is a liquid. I assume it has a pain reliever in it.I

Ashli used to like to eat the minute maid frozen fruit juice popsicles when she was sick and her throat hurt. She would eat those when she would eat or drink anything else. I was glad because dehydration is such a worry when they have a fever and they won't drink. You might want to give them or some other popsicle a try.

:( Poor kiddo. I hope he feels better soon. I would suggest a milk shake if he wants cool or maybe some hot cocoa (cooled down some with milk) if he wants warm.

When DD10 has strep throat she lives on popsicles:p

Sort of a lurker here, but a mom to 2 boys. My little 4-year-old had a sore throat, and the pharmacists told me about some bear lollipops that were like a baby throat lozenge. (For the life of me, I can't remember what brand, but you would recognize it.) Little guy liked the taste, and it seemed to help. My 15-year-old used them too when he had a really bad sore throat. :teeth:

I'm at work now, but when I get home, I'll post the brand I bought. Hope your little one feels better soon!

Popsicles. No dairy products with a fever, he'll end up with a tummy ache.

Popsicles, Italian Ice,sherbert. I'd stay away from ice cream...can cause phlegm.

Poor thing....hope he feels better soon. If the antibiotics have not kicked in yet, it sounds like it might be a viral sore throat and not Strept...at least in my kids with strept, the antibiotics kicked in almost immediately.

If warm feels better to him, what about warm apple juice...like cider at Christmas....but probably not add any spices as they might sting where he is inflamed.

I love those throat sprays. Also, if the pain isn't going away with your usual dose of Advil, you could check with your doctor to see if another dose might be appropriate.

If he wants cold, you could freeze the gatorade. If you keep stiring it as it freezes, every 20 minutes or so, you'll end up with a slushee instead of a popscicle texture.

I'll add to the popsicles...always helped me when I had a really sore throat. I think it's the combination of the cold and the sucking, cause regular lollypops help a little too.

I wouldn't give anything with milk in it. That's really not good for a sore throat like that. What about applesause? I used to put crushed up pills in it and it would slide down.

Hope your ds's throat is feeling better now. I gave Travis popsicles and sherbert when he had strept throat. I also had him gargle--not with salt water but with very warm bouillon (he couldn't tolerate salt water) the bouillon wasn't so distasteful for him. Also, believe it or not, he would gargle with Dr. Pepper. I know it sounds weird but it helped his throat. The hot bouillon really helped the discomfort.

I have been known to ask a doctor to prescribe topical xylocaine too, when he was older. That really helped a lot. Hope your boy is feeling better soon.

What a day with DS today! He's normally a real "toughy" when he's sick & doesn't cry or act needy or anything but this time...he cried almost all day today. He was so miserable! I gave him some chicken soup today for lunch, he took about 3 tspns of the broth & that was it. He did feel better though after that. For dinner he had a 1/2 of Push Up Pop. He's fevered all day & I've done the Motrin/Tylenol alternating every 3 hours. His face is so red from his fever.

I thank you all so much for your advice. I did just as most of you mentioned. I also called the Doc's office back & they said that since the lab didn't call them with his test results, they are probably letting the throat culture "grow" an additional 24 hours so they really didnt' think it was Strept. But I should know for sure tomorrow.

Well, I'm going to get to bed since I have a feeling I'll be up in about 2 to 3 hours for a couple hours again!

Oh....and we were going to have a b-day party for our soon to be 2 year old this coming Sunday, but in lieu of DS8 illness, we cancelled. I couldn't imagine going to a party where I knew someone was so ill. I either wouldn't go or I wouldn't touch anything there! So as a courtesy to my guests, we'll see about having baby's b-day at a later date (or at least, after I air my house out!!)

I think this poster is talking about Dimetapp Feel Better Bear Pops. They are cute too! :)

I hope he gets to feeling better real soon, Rose. Warm tea also helps to soothe the throat.:)

my DDs love those bears! My youngest had a sore throat earlier this week and I found some of those things like the listerine breath strips only they are for sore throats. I bought some but haven't tried them yet since she is now feeling much better. Can't remember the brand name, but I found them in the cough-drop section and they are specifically for children.
