The only bummer is everything's so little, it's going to look like there's nothing under the tree.

That's so true. My DS11 and DD9 will be jealous of my DS3's haul. It will look enormous next to their small packages. I have spent the same amount on all 3, it just doesn't LOOK like it. :earseek:

My DD doesn't want me to buy her clothes. She wants me to give her money to buy them herself. Apparently I don't have the taste of a 10 yeard old girl. :rotfl:

Ain't that the truth! Gift cards are your friends....

My dd (10) wants the nintendo ds/dogs bundle in the worst way - has been begging for it since it came out. We have told her no way was she getting another gameboy unit (she has 2) and if she wants it ask Santa. We really were not going to get it, but she came home the other day and said some kids said there was no Santa - nearly broke my heart. I asked her what did she say, and she looked at them in eye and said - "Well you're wrong, there is a Santa". She told me she still believes. Guess what I did then? Yep - went straight to Toys R Us and got the last teal bundle! Call me a sucker, but if my little girl believes Santa will bring it - then gosh darn it he will LOL!! Other than that, she is asking for Drake and Josh CD, Harry Potter Goblet of Fire game, Narnia Book Series, Friendship Bracelet string, Minutes for her Firefly phone, Disney dollars for our cruise and a new bathrobe.

Just like the other posters, I too believe the mp3 players/Ipods are just like when I asked for a Sony Walkman at that age - nothing wrong with it. My dd bought with her own money a Sandisk and loves it!

A couple things that haven't been mentioned - would you let her redecorate her room or bathroom? One year my parents took me shopping and we looked at bedding and towels and such - then I got them and got to redo my room and bathroom. It was great, and very useful. Magazine subscriptions are fun too, if she is into music or movies you could find one geared towards that.

Maybe offer instead of a large gift, offer to throw a holiday party for her with a group of friends? Take them skating or something? Or a New Years Party for them, so they can stay up late and celebrate? A creative way to wrap something like that is to do a scene (a kind of diorama) and then wrap that box.

Well, I guess my DD10 is a little weird--she's a science geek and is really into forensics, so she wants a fingerprint kit, a DNA lab, and something dead to dissect (I WISH I were kidding!). The ChatNow thing sounds like a good suggestion for her grandmother, though.

I wouldn't have an objection to an iPod, but she has a CD player that she seems very happy with. I would also consider a Tracphone, but maybe for her birthday next summer. I'm more worried about her friends abusing her minutes than her doing it herself--just not that kind of kid.

And I always have success with the hair/bath type accessories. I'm too cheap to buy them generally, so she gets a thrill when Santa (I think she still believes--she hasn't said otherwise) brings stuff that "Mom" never gets her.

Books are always good, too--my DD likes the American Girl books and anything like an organizer or book where you and your friends all write in them.

It's not an easy age, and much as I like gift cards, I try to go with actual gifts from Santa, and let relatives give the gift cards.

what about gift certificates to get her nails done...(unless she is like some of the young girls up here and already goes regularly :confused3 )

My dd would have loved that at age 10!! :goodvibes

WOW! You guys are great!! What a wonderful bunch of ideas. Thank you to everyone for your responses. :)

I think you have me convinced on the ipod- I will get it. It isn't that much different than a walkman and my DD does take very good care of her things.

I also love the bedroom idea- she has been asking for a down comforter, so I think I will recreate the Heavenly Bed from the Swan/Dolphin. She loves this and it is truly heavenly.

Good luck with the shopping everyone. I am going out today- I have to share my extreme thrill at being off work due to having surgery last Friday (laparoscopic gallbladder removal) I feel pretty good today-amazing less than 72 hours because it was Friday night.

Thanks again!

My DD10 has nothing on her list but an IPOD. She is getting a creative zen one...got a great deal at best buy and it holds tons of music. She is on the verge of not believing so she says she is not giving me her Santa list AND I have to go to bed with her on Christmas Eve. She would also love GC to clothing stores. Luckily we are going to WDW for Xmas (a surprise) and I don't have to buy too much.

WOw that was a speedy recovery...be careful don't overdo it!!

Thank's for starting this thread....I also felt like you did about the ipod....(we just got one for our DD16 and it was about 300....
our DS11 wanted one and I said no way....but a shuffle at $79 is very do-able!!
(i so do not like the downloading and stuff..we still have dial up and I really don't want the added expense of cable connection.....sigh..45's and albums were so much easier... :rotfl: )

Happy shopping...... CArol

Another idea for DDs around this age is craft stuff - both the kits and the materials in bulk. DD11 (but will be 12 in two weeks!!!) still loves all the bead and clay kinds of thigns, but she is really getting into knitting and needlepoint. I do both, so I've taught her the basics, and for Christmas she's getting a big, sheep-shaped basket filled with different kinds of yarns, knitting needles, and a book of easy knitting patterns. I think she'll be delighted with it!

DD just turned 10. She likes the Polly Pocket sets..esp. the "click it" stuff. She wants a Pixel Chix for Christmas, also the Little Pet Shop Stuff and the DS dog games. I found some terrific bath fizzies stuff at TJMaxx yesterday.

Dunno how much you guys travel by car; we are on the road all-the-time.

Going to my sister's farm in Oklahoma for ThanksGiv AND Xmas, driving to Diz/Orlando in Jaunary, traveling (prob by car) with a Group of 4 families to the Smithsonian this coming summer, etc... (anyhow)...

We bought DS(11) a portable DVD-movie player, that will also play music CDs, and will accept Video-In from handheld video games... and it was only 99 bucks.

The bad part is (so we could use it for Turkey Day), he got Xmas early, so we'll still have to have SOMETHING under the tree in December.

Just a thot.. some of the electronic prices are getting pretty reasonable.

later,,,,,
